Where to stay

Where to stay in Lisbon: a neighborhood guide

Lisbon is a city you walk — up steep hills, down to the riverfront, between neighborhoods that change personality block by block. Where you sleep determines which Lisbon you experience. Here are five neighborhoods that work for different traveler types.

Baixa

Lisbon’s central downtown grid — Pombaline architecture from the 18th-century rebuild after the earthquake. Walkable, central, and on every tram and metro line.

Best for
First-time visitors who want maximum convenience
What’s nearby
Rua Augusta arch, Praça do Comércio riverfront, Rossio Station, walking distance to Alfama and Chiado
Price range
Mid — many four-star hotels in the EUR 100-200 range
Where to start
Pousada de Lisboa for luxury; Memmo Alfama nearby (technically Alfama but adjoining) for design; Lisbon Story Guesthouse for budget

Alfama

Lisbon’s oldest and most photogenic neighborhood. Steep alleys, fado bars, terraced miradouros, and a feeling of an old fishing village inside the city.

Best for
Photographers, those wanting atmosphere over convenience
What’s nearby
Castelo de São Jorge, Lisbon Cathedral, Miradouro Santa Luzia, Tram 28 route
Price range
Mid — smaller boutique stays in EUR 90-180
Where to start
Memmo Alfama for design; Lost Inn Lisbon for affordable; Solar do Castelo for boutique

Bairro Alto / Chiado

Bairro Alto is the nightlife district (loud after 11pm); Chiado adjoining is more refined with cafés and bookshops.

Best for
Travelers wanting nightlife and the literary-café culture
What’s nearby
Time Out Market, Carmo Convent ruins, Largo do Carmo, Praça Luís de Camões
Price range
Mid to high — design hotels and rentals in EUR 120-250
Where to start
Bairro Alto Hotel for splurge; Casa Balthazar for boutique; Lisb’on Hostel for budget

Príncipe Real

Lisbon’s gentrified upper-town. Galleries, concept stores, brunch culture, and a refined, expat-leaning crowd.

Best for
Travelers who want a quieter, more residential feel with serious food
What’s nearby
Príncipe Real garden, Embaixada (concept-store mansion), Botanical Garden, walking distance to Bairro Alto
Price range
High — design hotels and apartment rentals in EUR 150-300
Where to start
The Lumiares for design; Hotel Britania for vintage luxury; Casa do Príncipe for guesthouse

Belém

Western Lisbon. Monuments, museums, and the famous pastéis de Belém custard tarts. Quieter and more spread out — a different rhythm from central neighborhoods.

Best for
Museum-lovers, families with kids, travelers wanting calmer evenings
What’s nearby
Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, MAAT museum, Coach Museum, riverside walking
Price range
Mid — limited hotel selection; mostly via Apartments or Airbnb
Where to start
Altis Belém for waterfront luxury; few mid-range options — consider apartments
