Trip duration guide

How many days do you need in Lisbon?

Quick answer: We recommend 3-4 days in Lisbon, with 4 being the sweet spot. Three days covers central Lisbon (Baixa, Alfama, Belém). Four days adds a Sintra day-trip — almost mandatory for first-time visitors. Five days lets you add Cascais or a fado dinner.

How many days for what kind of trip

2 days

Day 1: Baixa + Alfama + Castelo de São Jorge. Day 2: Belém (Jerónimos + Tower + pastéis de Belém). Workable but skips Sintra.

3 days (minimum)

Add Day 3 for Sintra day-trip — Pena Palace + Quinta da Regaleira + Moorish Castle. Now you have a real Lisbon trip.

4 days (recommended)

Add Bairro Alto + Chiado walking + a serious fado dinner + Time Out Market. Best first-trip duration.

5 days

Add a Cascais coast day-trip + LX Factory + ferry across to Cacilhas for dinner. Lets you slow down.

7+ days

Combine Lisbon with Porto (3 hours by train) + Douro Valley + Madeira (1-hour flight). Best for a complete Portugal trip.

How length shapes your Lisbon trip

Lisbon’s hills are steep — more days = less Tram 28 fatigue. Most travelers underestimate how much walking they’ll do on the cobbles.

What to skip if you have less time

If you only have 2 days, skip Sintra (sad but necessary) and focus on Alfama + Belém. Or sacrifice an evening to fit Sintra as a half-day.
