Japan packing list

Japan Packing List: Tokyo + Kyoto Travel Essentials (2026)

Japan is one of the most-prepared travel cultures (vending machines + convenience stores everywhere). But these items genuinely matter when you can’t easily find them locally.

01

Walking shoes (5-7 miles/day)

Japan is walked. Worn sneakers > new dress shoes.

02

Layered clothing

Variable spring/autumn temperatures (8-22C). Light jackets that pack down small.

03

Cash wallet

Japan is more cash-based than expected. 10,000 yen daily.

04

Suica or PASMO card

Get at airport on arrival. Tap-and-go everything.

05

Pocket WiFi or eSIM

Pre-book pocket WiFi at airport (Ninja WiFi) OR use Airalo eSIM ($20).

06

Slip-on shoes

Take off at temples, ryokans, traditional restaurants. Avoid tie-laced sneakers.

07

Universal travel adapter

Japan uses Type A (US-style) but voltage is 100V.

08

Small backpack (20-25L)

For day trips. Daypack with water bottle + camera + snacks.

09

Reusable shopping bag

Plastic-bag costs at convenience stores.

10

Travel umbrella (compact)

Sudden afternoon rain. Many trains and stations sell them too (¥500).

11

Allergies + pollen meds

Spring (March-May) has heavy sugi/hinoki pollen. Pack antihistamines.

12

Earplugs

Trains and capsule hotels can be loud. Foam earplugs work.

13

Pen for immigration form

Many international flights require landing card.

14

Solid sunscreen (carry-on legal)

Japan’s UV is high in summer. Solid sticks pass airport security.

15

Insurance docs printed

Hospitals may ask. Confirmed travel insurance with English copy.
