The 12 things to do in Marrakech

Marrakech is sensory overload in the best way – the medina is one of the densest, most theatrical spaces in any city, and the surrounding region delivers desert and mountain extensions. These 12 things define a 3-5 day Marrakech trip.

01

Djemaa el-Fna at sunset

The world’s most famous public square. By day it’s snake charmers, henna artists, monkey handlers; by night it’s hundreds of food stalls with grilled lamb, harira soup, snail broth.

Why do it
Pure Marrakech. UNESCO recognized this square as an Intangible Cultural Heritage masterpiece for the storytelling tradition still practiced here.
How long
2-3 hours
What it costs
Free to walk; food stalls 30-100 dirhams ($3-10) per dish
When to go
Arrive 30 min before sunset, watch the night transform. Avoid lunchtime when scams are most active.
02

Bahia Palace

19th-century palace of a grand vizier. Two acres of mosaic-tiled rooms, painted cedar ceilings, andalusian gardens.

Why do it
The most concentrated example of Moroccan craft tradition (zellige tilework, carved cedar, plaster) in Marrakech.
How long
1.5-2 hours
What it costs
70 dirhams (~$7)
When to go
Pre-10am or last hour before close. Closed Friday afternoon.
03

Souk crawl in the medina

Get systematically lost in the medina’s covered alleys. Souk Semmarine for textiles and crafts, Souk Haddadine for metalwork, Souk el-Attarine for spices, Souk des Teinturiers for the dyers.

Why do it
Best preserved working medina in Morocco. Negotiation is part of the experience (start at 30-40% of asking price).
How long
3-5 hours
What it costs
Free to walk; purchases vary
When to go
Morning (10am-1pm) when most active. Friday afternoon is quietest (prayer day).
04

Madrasa Ben Youssef

Restored 14th-century Islamic college with the most intricate carved-stucco interior in Marrakech. Re-opened after restoration in 2022.

Why do it
Architecturally the most refined building in Marrakech and significantly less crowded than Bahia Palace.
How long
1-1.5 hours
What it costs
60 dirhams (~$6)
When to go
Pre-9am or last hour. Closed during prayer times.
05

Saadian Tombs

16th-century necropolis rediscovered in 1917. The Hall of Twelve Columns is Italian Carrara marble and one of the most beautiful Moroccan interiors.

Why do it
Easily combined with Kasbah Mosque and the Mellah (Jewish Quarter). Tightly enclosed and atmospheric.
How long
1 hour
What it costs
70 dirhams (~$7)
When to go
Pre-10am. Queues form by 11am.
06

Jardin Majorelle + Yves Saint Laurent Museum

Cobalt-blue villa and cactus garden owned by YSL until his death; the museum is across the street. Most-photographed garden in Marrakech.

Why do it
Visual contrast with the medina’s chaos. The blue is the photo; the cactus collection and museum are the substance.

What it costs
Garden 150 dirhams; YSL Museum 100 dirhams
When to go
Pre-9am opening or last entry. Pre-book online.
07

Hammam experience

Traditional Moroccan bath. Public hammams cost a few dirhams; tourist hammams (like Les Bains de Marrakech or Le Bain Bleu) offer the full ritual with massage.

Why do it
Centuries-old social practice. Goes deep – exfoliation with black soap, full-body scrub, argan-oil massage.
How long
1.5-2.5 hours
What it costs
Public hammam 50 dirhams; tourist hammam 400-800 dirhams (~$40-80)
When to go
Late afternoon after souk wandering. Pre-book tourist hammams.
08

Day trip to Atlas Mountains (Ourika Valley)

Berber villages in the foothills, river-side terrace lunches, Setti Fatma waterfalls. The closest mountain escape from Marrakech.

Why do it
Cool relief from city heat. Authentic Berber tea ceremony with a host family is the highlight.
How long
Full day
What it costs
$25-50 organized tour
When to go
April-October for hiking; winter for snow-capped peaks views. Avoid Sunday (Moroccan day-tripper crowds).
09

Agafay Desert sunset

Stony ‘mini-Sahara’ 45 minutes from Marrakech. Camel rides, quad biking, sundowner dinners at desert camps.

Why do it
Not real Sahara dunes (those are 8 hours away at Merzouga) but enough desert feel for a half-day. Quad biking is the kid favorite.
How long
Half day or overnight
What it costs
$30-80 sunset tour
When to go
Sunset is the move. Pre-book through your riad.
10

Riad rooftop dinner

Most Marrakech riads have rooftop terraces with full dinner service – tagines, couscous, mint tea. La Sultana, Riad Yasmine, Riad El Fenn are iconic.

Maison de la Photographie

Small private museum in the medina, with 3 floors of historic Moroccan photography (1870-1960). Rooftop has one of the best views over the medina.

How long
4-5 hours
What it costs
$50-100 including ingredients and meal
