Trip duration guide

How many days do you need in Cusco?

Quick answer: We recommend at least 5-6 days in the Cusco region for a first visit, including 2-3 days for altitude acclimatization. Machu Picchu requires careful logistics (train + bus). Don’t attempt Inca Trail without 3+ days acclimatization first.

How many days for what kind of trip

3 days

Too short. Altitude acclimatization alone needs 48-72 hours before Machu Picchu or treks. Three days = miserable.

5 days (minimum)

Day 1: Cusco arrival + rest day (coca tea, no alcohol). Day 2: Sacred Valley day-trip (Pisac + Ollantaytambo). Day 3: Cusco city + ruins. Day 4: Machu Picchu day-trip. Day 5: Cusco wrap-up + departure.

6-7 days (recommended)

Add a Rainbow Mountain day-trip OR Maras Salt Pans + Moray. Plus more time in the Sacred Valley with an overnight in Ollantaytambo. Best first-trip duration.

8+ days

Add the 4-day Inca Trail trek (permits required 6 months ahead) OR Salkantay Trek (no permit needed). Or extend to Lake Titicaca (10h bus from Cusco).

10+ days

Combine Cusco with Lima (Peruvian coast, 1h flight) + Amazon basin (Iquitos) for a complete Peru trip.

How length shapes your Cusco trip

Altitude (3,400m) is the constraint. More days = better acclimatization = better trip overall. Most travelers underestimate how much altitude affects them.

What to skip if you have less time

If you only have 4 days, skip Rainbow Mountain and focus on Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu day-trip. Don’t try multi-day treks.
