Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Neighborhoods by Travel Style

Bangkok is huge + has terrible traffic. Picking the right neighborhood (and right BTS line) makes or breaks your trip. Here’s the guide.

Sukhumvit (Asok/Phrom Phong), Best for 1st-time visitors

Why: BTS access, malls (EmQuartier, Terminal 21), restaurants, expat-friendly. Hotels: SO Sofitel, Park Hyatt Bangkok, Westin Grande Sukhumvit. Best for: 1st visit, business, mature travelers. Budget: $$ to $$$$.

Silom — Best for business + Patpong nightlife

Why: business district by day, Patpong nightlife by night, BTS + MRT, Lumphini Park. Hotels: Banyan Tree Bangkok, Le Meridien Bangkok, Centre Point Hotel Silom. Best for: business, nightlife seekers, mature travelers. Budget: $$$ to $$$$.

Riverside (Bang Rak/Khlong San): Best for romance + views

Why: river views, traditional + luxury hotels, peaceful, river boat access. Hotels: Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, The Peninsula, Avani+ Riverside. Best for: honeymoons, romantic trips, luxury travelers. Budget: $$$ to $$$$.

Khao San (Banglampu). Best for backpackers + young travelers

Why: famous Khao San Road backpacker scene, cheap, lively, gritty. Hotels: Khaosan Park Resort, Lub d, Bunkboutique. Best for: 20s-30s, backpackers, party scene. Budget: $ to $$.

Thonglor/Ekkamai, Best for hip + foodie scene

Why: hipster cafes + bars + nightclubs + design boutiques, BTS access, young Thai locals. Hotels: 137 Pillars Suites, Hotel Indigo, Trinity Silom. Best for: 2nd-time Bangkok, design-conscious, foodies. Budget: $$ to $$$$.

Sathorn — Best for business + elegant

Why: business + diplomatic district, parks, near Lumphini, BTS + MRT. Hotels: The Sukhothai Bangkok, COMO Metropolitan, So Sofitel. Best for: business, mature travelers, longer stays. Budget: $$$ to $$$$.

Chinatown (Yaowarat): Best for foodies + atmosphere

Why: best street food in Bangkok, Wat Traimit (Golden Buddha), authentic Chinese-Thai culture. Hotels: Shanghai Mansion, Wanderlust Bangkok, Hou Hai Hostel. Best for: foodies, return Bangkok visitors. Budget: $ to $$$.

Don’t stay in: Pratunam (chaotic + low quality), Khlong Toei (port area), Soi Cowboy/Nana (red-light, low-quality budget hotels)

These areas exist but are not recommended for first-time or quality-focused travelers. Stay in Sukhumvit even on a budget.

Pro tip: Bangkok traffic is brutal. ALWAYS stay within 500m of a BTS Skytrain station. The Sukhumvit Line (Asok, Phrom Phong, Thonglor) is the safest pick. The Silom Line is also solid. Off-BTS = stuck in 90-min taxi rides daily.
