Five travel-visa tips Americans miss

  1. Validity matters more than visa. Most countries require 6+ months of remaining passport validity from your return date. Renew well before any trip.
  2. Schengen 90/180 is a rolling window. 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries combined — not 90 days per country.
  3. Carry a printed onward-flight confirmation. Some airlines and border officers ask for proof of exit before letting you board or enter.
  4. Apply for e-visas 1+ week ahead. Most are 24-72h but processing surges before holidays. Don't cut it close.
  5. Bring USD cash for visa-on-arrival. Many countries require exact-fee USD bills, undamaged. ATMs at airports run out during peak season.

Visa-free travel — FAQ

How many countries can US passport holders visit visa-free?

Across our 62-country guide set, 40 are visa-free for short tourist stays. The full US passport visa-free count (across all 195 countries) is around 184 destinations depending on the source — but among popular travel destinations, most are accessible visa-free or with simple on-arrival/e-visa.

Is the Schengen 90/180 rule changing in 2026?

The 90-days-in-any-180-day-window rule remains unchanged. The new EU ETIAS pre-authorization (similar to US ESTA, $7) becomes mandatory from 2026 for most short-stay visitors — Americans included. It's not a visa, but you'll need it before boarding any flight to Europe.

Can I work or study on a visa-free entry?

No. Visa-free means short tourist stays only. Working or studying — even online for a US employer — usually requires a specific work or digital nomad visa. Several countries (Portugal, Spain, Estonia, Croatia) offer formal digital-nomad visa programs.

What's the difference between visa-on-arrival and an e-visa?

Visa-on-arrival is stamped at the border (you fly first, get visa at airport). E-visa is applied for online before travel and approved digitally — printed or stored on phone. E-visa is generally faster and safer for peak-season travel.

Do these rules apply to passports other than US?

No — visa rules are bilateral. UK, Canadian, EU, Australian, etc. passport holders have different lists. Always check the destination's embassy site for your specific passport country.
