Cincinnati sits within a comfortable drive of more variety than most people give it credit for, and the twelve below are ordered by how long it takes to get there. Drive times are for clear roads, so add to them for a Friday evening start.
1. East Fork State Park (about 45 minutes)
A large reservoir with swimming beaches and a backcountry trail that circles most of the lake. The nearest thing to a proper day outdoors without leaving the metro area behind for long.
2. Dayton and the Air Force museum (about 1 hour)
The National Museum of the United States Air Force is free, enormous and holds four presidential aircraft in a hangar you can walk through. Easily a full day, and one of the best free museums in the country.
3. Hueston Woods (about 1 hour)
An old-growth beech and maple forest with a lake, a lodge and some of the best fossil hunting in Ohio along the shoreline. Quiet on a Saturday in a way the closer parks are not.
4. Lexington and horse country (about 1 hour 30 minutes)
White fences, bluegrass and working thoroughbred farms, several of which take visitors by appointment. The Kentucky Horse Park handles it if you would rather not book ahead, and Keeneland races in April and October.
5. Columbus (about 1 hour 45 minutes)
The Short North for food and galleries, the Scioto Mile along the river, and Hocking Hills within another hour if you want to keep going.
6. Louisville (about 1 hour 45 minutes)
Bourbon distilleries within half an hour of the city, the Muhammad Ali Center and Churchill Downs. Go outside Derby week unless you booked a long time ago.
7. Indianapolis (about 2 hours)
The Speedway and its museum, a very large children’s museum and the downtown canal walk. Straightforward driving the whole way.
8. Red River Gorge (about 2 hours)
Sandstone arches, a hundred natural bridges and some of the best sport climbing east of the Rockies. Natural Bridge State Resort Park is the easy version with a skylift.
9. Hocking Hills (about 2 hours 15 minutes)
Recess caves cut into sandstone and gorge trails that stay cool in August and freeze into ice formations in January. Book a cabin early for autumn weekends.
10. Mammoth Cave National Park (about 3 hours)
The longest known cave system in the world, with more than 400 mapped miles. Tours book out in summer, and the surface trails are worth a half day on their own.
11. Cleveland (about 4 hours)
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a free art museum and the West Side Market. Long for two nights but comfortable for three.
12. Nashville (about 4 hours 30 minutes)
The Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman and a Broadway strip that is loud and knows it. Book accommodation well ahead; weekends are the whole economy.
Getting out of Cincinnati without a car
Rail here is close to useless for a weekend. Amtrak’s Cardinal calls at Cincinnati only three days a week and does so in the small hours, which suits almost nobody. Intercity buses to Columbus, Indianapolis and Louisville are frequent and cheap, and are the realistic car-free option for the city trips on this list.

If you are deciding on the day, work backwards from the drive rather than the destination: anything under two hours leaves you a genuine Saturday, and anything past four is really a three-day trip wearing a weekend label.
