Louisville sits within a comfortable drive of more variety than most people give it credit for, and the twelve below are ordered by how long it takes to get there. Drive times are for clear roads, so add to them for a Friday evening start.
1. Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest (about 35 minutes)
Sixteen thousand acres of forest with a canopy walk, a lake loop and Thomas Dambo’s giant wooden trolls hidden in the woods. The easiest genuine escape from the city.
2. Bardstown and the Bourbon Trail (about 45 minutes)
The densest concentration of distilleries anywhere, with Heaven Hill, Willett and Maker’s Mark all within half an hour of a very pretty county-seat town. Book tours ahead and arrange a driver.
3. Lexington and horse country (about 1 hour 15 minutes)
Working thoroughbred farms behind white fences, the Kentucky Horse Park for the version that needs no appointment, and Keeneland racing in April and October.
4. Cincinnati (about 1 hour 45 minutes)
Over-the-Rhine is one of the largest intact 19th-century districts in America and is now full of restaurants. Add the riverfront and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.
5. Mammoth Cave National Park (about 1 hour 45 minutes)
The longest known cave system in the world, with more than 400 mapped miles of passage. Tours sell out in summer, so book before you drive down.
6. Red River Gorge (about 2 hours)
Sandstone arches, a hundred natural bridges and world-class sport climbing. Natural Bridge State Resort Park next door has a skylift if you would rather not hike up.
7. Indianapolis (about 2 hours)
The Speedway and its museum, a very large children’s museum and the canal walk downtown. Easy driving the whole way.
8. Nashville (about 2 hours 45 minutes)
The Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman and a Broadway strip that is loud and knows it. Weekends are the whole economy here, so book early.
9. Land Between the Lakes (about 3 hours 30 minutes)
A long peninsula between two enormous reservoirs, with an elk and bison range, a working 1850s farm and some of the darkest skies in the region.
10. St. Louis (about 4 hours)
The Gateway Arch, Forest Park, and a zoo and art museum that are both free once you have arrived. Better as a three-day weekend.
11. Great Smoky Mountains (about 4 hours)
The most visited national park in the country, and busy for good reason. Cades Cove and Clingmans Dome are the headline stops; go midweek or in the shoulder season if you can.
12. Chicago (about 4 hours 45 minutes)
Long but straightforward. The Art Institute, the lakefront path and the architecture river cruise fill two days without difficulty.
Getting out of Louisville without a car
There is no rail option at all. Louisville is one of the largest cities in the United States with no Amtrak service: the Kentucky Cardinal ran only from 1999 and was discontinued on 4 July 2003, and nothing has replaced it. Intercity buses cover Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Nashville, but everything else on this list assumes a car.

If you are deciding on the day, work backwards from the drive rather than the destination: anything under two hours leaves you a genuine Saturday, and anything past four is really a three-day trip wearing a weekend label.
