Japan is the one to watch. How to choose where to go in September 2026
Start with what you want the sea to do. If swimming is the point of the trip, Greece, Turkey and southern Italy hold their warmth longest, because the Mediterranean is still releasing heat it stored all summer. Croatia suits sailing more than sunbathing, with calmer water once the August fleet has gone. Portugal is the outlier here: the Atlantic stays noticeably cooler, so pick it for light, surf and coastline rather than lingering swims.
Then decide which half of the month you can actually travel. The first two weeks are more reliable for island trips, since Greek and Croatian ferry and excursion timetables typically thin out from late September into October. If your dates are fixed in the last week, the mainland travels better: Italy, Spain, France, Turkey and Morocco all keep full transport and opening hours while the islands wind down.
Weigh how much variance you can absorb. Peru, Italy and Morocco are the low-drama picks this month. Southern Japan is the opposite, sitting in the peak of typhoon season, so it rewards a longer trip with a spare day rather than a tight five-night itinerary. If Japan is non-negotiable on short dates, weight the route towards Hokkaido and inland Honshu instead of Kyushu and Okinawa.
