New Orleans sits in a delta, which means the getaways fall into three clear directions: west into Cajun country and the Atchafalaya, north up the Mississippi into bluff and plantation country, and east along a Gulf coast that gets whiter and quieter the further you drive. Nothing here needs more than about three hours.
Ordered by drive time, because on a weekend that is what decides.
1. Barataria Preserve (30 minutes)
Part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park, and the easiest swamp you will ever reach. Boardwalks run out over the cypress and tupelo, alligators are routine in warm months, and it is free. Go early for birds and to beat the heat; mosquito repellent is not optional from April onward.
2. Baton Rouge (1 hour 20 minutes)
The state capital, with the tallest capitol building in the United States and an observation deck at the top of it. The USS Kidd is moored on the river, and the LSU campus gives the city its energy. A good half-day paired with a plantation site on the way up.
3. Biloxi and Gulfport, Mississippi (1 hour 30 minutes)
The closest proper beach, a long strand of sand along the Mississippi Sound with casinos behind it. The water is warm and calm rather than clear. Ohr-O’Keefe, Frank Gehry’s museum for the potter George Ohr, is a genuine surprise.
4. Atchafalaya Basin (1 hour 30 minutes)
The largest wetland and swamp in the United States, and a completely different experience from the day-trip swamp tours near the city. Small-boat operators out of Henderson or Breaux Bridge take you into flooded cypress forest where the water is still and the birdlife is exceptional.
5. St Francisville (1 hour 45 minutes)
A bluff town above the Mississippi with antebellum houses, huge live oaks and the Audubon connection – John James Audubon painted many of the Birds of America here. Quieter and more atmospheric than the plantation strip closer to the city, and a better base for it.
6. Ocean Springs, Mississippi (1 hour 45 minutes)
The arts town of the Gulf Coast, small and walkable, with the Walter Anderson Museum holding the work of a genuinely singular American painter. Pair it with the Gulf Islands National Seashore, where the barrier islands are reached by boat and the sand is white quartz.
7. Grand Isle (2 hours)
Louisiana’s only inhabited barrier island, and about as far south as a road goes. Fishing is the main business, the beach is working rather than pretty, and the spring bird migration fallout here is one of the best in North America. It is weather-exposed – check conditions.
8. Lafayette and Cajun Country (2 hours 15 minutes)
The reason to drive west. Live Cajun and zydeco in rural dance halls, boudin from a petrol station counter that will be better than most restaurant food, and Vermilionville for the history behind it. A fais do-do on a Saturday night is the most distinctive thing in the state.
9. Mobile, Alabama (2 hours 15 minutes)
Mardi Gras started here, in 1703, rather than in New Orleans, and Mobile still runs a serious and far less crowded version. Outside carnival, the Battleship USS Alabama, the azalea-lined historic districts and Bellingrath Gardens carry a weekend.
10. Avery Island (2 hours 30 minutes)
A salt dome rising from the marsh, and the home of Tabasco since 1868. The factory tour is short and genuinely interesting, but Jungle Gardens is the reason to come – 170 acres of subtropical planting with an egret rookery that Edward McIlhenny founded to save the birds from the plume trade.
11. Natchez, Mississippi (3 hours)
High on a bluff over the river, with more surviving antebellum architecture than anywhere in the South. It is also where the Natchez Trace Parkway begins – 444 miles of commercial-free parkway running to Nashville, and one of the best driving roads in the country.
12. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama (3 hours)
The white sand starts here. Quartz washed down from the Appalachians gives these beaches their colour and their squeak, and the water is clearer than anything closer to the Mississippi delta. Gulf State Park has the trails and the quieter stretches.
Cheap weekend getaways from New Orleans by car
- Barataria Preserve costs nothing and delivers the swamp most visitors pay a tour operator for.
- The Mississippi Gulf Coast is consistently cheaper than the Alabama and Florida beaches an hour further east, for water that is warmer if less clear.
- Cajun country is inexpensive if you eat where the boudin is sold rather than where the tourism is – and the dance halls generally charge very little at the door.
- Camping at Gulf State Park or Fontainebleau across the causeway makes the coast a budget weekend rather than a resort one.
Last-minute weekend getaways from New Orleans
- The Mississippi coast absorbs short notice better than anywhere else on this list, because the casino hotels hold large inventory.
- Avoid the Alabama and Florida beaches on summer weekends and spring break without a booking – they fill completely.
- Check hurricane season from June to November before committing to any coastal weekend, and watch the forecast rather than the calendar.
- Festival weekends change everything. Jazz Fest, Mardi Gras and the Lafayette festivals empty regional accommodation for a wide radius.
