Cleveland is unusually well placed for weekends. A national park sits half an hour south, the Lake Erie islands are a short ferry from an hour west, and three major cities plus Niagara Falls are inside three and a half hours. The lake dominates the north, and the further south you drive the more the land folds into gorges and farm country.
Ordered by drive time.
1. Cuyahoga Valley National Park (30 minutes)
The only national park in Ohio, filling the corridor between Cleveland and Akron. The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail runs its length on the flat, Brandywine Falls is a short walk from the car park, and the scenic railroad will carry your bike one way so you can ride back. Autumn colour peaks in the second half of October.
2. Sandusky and Cedar Point (1 hour)
Cedar Point has more roller coasters than almost any park on earth, on a peninsula sticking into Lake Erie. Even if rides are not the point, Sandusky is the ferry hub for the islands and has a decent waterfront of its own. The park is seasonal, roughly May to early November.
3. Kelleys Island (1 hour 15 minutes plus ferry)
The quieter island, and geologically the more interesting. The glacial grooves here are the largest easily accessible example in the world – limestone scoured into deep parallel channels by ice. The island is small enough to cycle in an afternoon.
4. Amish Country, Holmes County (1 hour 15 minutes)
The largest Amish settlement in the world, larger than Lancaster County. Berlin and Millersburg are the commercial centres; the back roads between them are the point. Remember that Sunday is not a shopping day here and that buggies share the road – slow down well before you think you need to.
5. Put-in-Bay, South Bass Island (1 hour 30 minutes plus ferry)
The busy island, and in summer a proper party town. Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial is the tallest Doric column in the world and commemorates the 1813 battle fought offshore – the observation deck reaches Canada on a clear day. Golf carts are the local transport.
6. Mohican State Park (1 hour 30 minutes)
Hemlock gorge, a covered bridge and canoeing on the Mohican River, with the state forest around it for walking. It is the closest proper woodland weekend to the city and considerably quieter than Hocking Hills.
7. Presque Isle and Erie, Pennsylvania (1 hour 45 minutes)
A sandy peninsula curving into Lake Erie with genuine beaches, a lighthouse and one of the better birding spots on the Great Lakes during migration. The sunsets here are the reason people make the drive.
8. Columbus (2 hours 15 minutes)
The state capital and a far better weekend than its reputation suggests – German Village’s brick streets, the Short North gallery strip, the Scioto Mile riverfront and a serious restaurant scene driven by the university.
9. Pittsburgh (2 hours 15 minutes)
Three rivers, a funicular up Mount Washington for the best city view in the eastern United States, and the Andy Warhol Museum – the largest single-artist museum in North America. The bridges and the topography make it far more dramatic than most American cities.
10. Detroit (2 hours 45 minutes)
The Detroit Institute of Arts holds Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry murals, which alone justify the drive. Add the Motown Museum, the riverfront and Eastern Market, and it is one of the most interesting weekends within three hours.
11. Hocking Hills (2 hours 45 minutes)
Ohio’s best landscape: sandstone gorges, recessed caves and waterfalls at Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave and Cedar Falls. It is deservedly popular, so go on a weekday or start early, and note that the trails are slippery and genuinely steep in places.
12. Niagara Falls (3 hours 15 minutes)
Close enough for a weekend, and the Canadian side has the better view if you have a passport. Go in winter if you want it dramatic and empty – the mist freezes onto everything and the crowds vanish. Check border wait times before committing to a crossing.
Cheap weekend getaways from Cleveland by car
- Cuyahoga Valley has no entrance fee, which makes it the cheapest national park weekend in the country.
- The Metroparks Emerald Necklace rings the city and costs nothing, and several reservations are good enough to be destinations rather than substitutes.
- Amish country is inexpensive if you buy from the farm stands and bakeries rather than the tour-bus shops on the main roads.
- Presque Isle is free and has the best beaches within two hours.
Last-minute weekend getaways from Cleveland
- Columbus and Pittsburgh absorb short notice easily – both are large enough to have rooms on a Friday.
- Hocking Hills does not. The cabins book months ahead for autumn weekends, and arriving without one means a long drive home.
- The islands are seasonal. Ferry services reduce sharply outside summer and stop when ice forms, so check the schedule rather than assuming.
- Watch lake-effect snow from November to February. The snowbelt east of the city can make a two-hour drive into four with no warning from the city forecast.
