San Antonio sits on the Balcones Escarpment, the seam where the Texas Hill Country drops away to the coastal plain. That single line of geology is why the getaways in one direction are limestone canyons, spring-fed rivers and vineyards, and in the other are barrier islands and salt marsh. Almost everything worth driving to is within about two hours.
These are ordered by drive time, because on a weekend that is the number that decides.
1. Natural Bridge Caverns (30 minutes)
The largest commercial cavern system in Texas, and the easiest possible half-day out of the city. The formations are genuinely impressive and the temperature underground sits around 21C whatever August is doing above. Pair it with the wildlife drive next door if you have children.
2. New Braunfels and Gruene (40 minutes)
The Comal and the Guadalupe are the spring-fed rivers Texans tube in summer, and the Comal is the shorter, gentler one. Gruene Hall, just outside town, is the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas and still books serious acts. Go on a weekday in July if you want the river to yourself.
3. Bandera (50 minutes)
Self-styled Cowboy Capital of the World, and the dude ranches around it are the real article rather than a theme. The Medina River, Hill Country State Natural Area and a main street of honky-tonks make it the most concentrated Western weekend within an hour of the city.
4. Fredericksburg (1 hour 15 minutes)
German-founded in 1846 and still visibly so, with a main street of stone buildings and the surprisingly good National Museum of the Pacific War. It is also the hub of the Hill Country wine road, which now runs to hundreds of tasting rooms. Peach season in early summer is the local draw.
5. Austin (1 hour 20 minutes)
Close enough to be a night out and different enough to be a trip. Barton Springs, the lake trail, the east-side food and the live music are the point; the state capitol and the LBJ library give it ballast. Book ahead for any festival weekend or do not come at all.
6. Enchanted Rock (1 hour 45 minutes)
A pink granite batholith rising from the scrub, and the summit walk is short, steep and worth it. The park caps daily entry and fills by mid-morning on cool weekends, so reserve a day pass in advance. Dawn and the last hour are both far better than the middle of the day.
7. Lost Maples State Natural Area (2 hours)
A relict stand of bigtooth maples in a canyon, and the only reliable autumn colour in Texas. Peak is usually the first half of November and the park limits numbers, so it books out. Outside autumn it is a quiet canyon walk with clear water.
8. Corpus Christi and Padre Island (2 hours 15 minutes)
The closest real beach. Padre Island National Seashore protects the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world, and driving down the sand until the crowds vanish is the whole appeal. The Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington cover a rainy morning.
9. Port Aransas and Rockport (2 hours 30 minutes)
The quieter coastal option, reached by a short free ferry. Rockport is the wintering ground for whooping cranes, among the rarest birds in North America, from roughly November to March, and the boat trips out to see them are the best wildlife experience on the Texas coast.
10. Houston (3 hours)
Worth the drive for the museum district and Space Center Houston, and for a food scene that is among the most genuinely international in the country. It is a driving city, so pick one district and stay in it rather than crossing town repeatedly.
11. Marfa (6 hours 30 minutes)
A stretch weekend, and only worth it with three days. The Chinati Foundation installed Donald Judd’s permanent works in old army buildings, the high desert light is extraordinary, and the Marfa Lights viewing area is free and inexplicable. Book accommodation well ahead; there is very little of it.
12. Big Bend National Park (6 hours 30 minutes)
Among the most remote national parks in the lower 48, with the least light pollution of any of them. Three distinct landscapes – river, desert and the Chisos mountains – in one park. Go between November and April; summer in the desert here is genuinely dangerous.
Cheap weekend getaways from San Antonio by car
- Enchanted Rock and Lost Maples cost a state park day pass and nothing else, and both are best as early starts rather than overnights.
- Tubing the Comal is close to free if you bring your own tube and use the city park entry rather than an outfitter.
- The Mission Reach of the San Antonio River is worth remembering before you drive anywhere – four World Heritage missions on a free hike-and-bike trail inside the city.
- Camping on Padre Island is permitted on the beach itself with a permit, which makes the coast the cheapest overnight on this list.
Last-minute weekend getaways from San Antonio
- Bandera and the Medina valley almost always have a room, even when Fredericksburg does not.
- Corpus Christi has enough coastal inventory to absorb a Friday decision outside spring break and summer holidays.
- Avoid Fredericksburg and Enchanted Rock on short notice in spring wildflower season and in November – both are capacity-limited and book weeks out.
- Check the river levels before committing to a tubing weekend; drought years close sections of the Guadalupe entirely.
