Sacramento’s advantage is that it sits between everything. The Sierra Nevada is under two hours east, wine country is an hour west, the Pacific is two and a half, and three of California’s national parks are within four and a half hours. Very few American cities have this range inside a weekend.

1. Gold Country: Nevada City and Grass Valley (1 hour)
The best-preserved Gold Rush towns in the state, with intact nineteenth-century main streets and the Empire Mine, one of the deepest and richest hardrock gold mines in California. Highway 49 links the whole chain of them if you want to keep driving.
2. Napa and Sonoma (1 hour 15 minutes)
Napa is the famous one and Sonoma is the relaxed one, with more space between the wineries and lower tasting fees. Book tastings in advance – the walk-in era is largely over – and plan a driver or a car service rather than improvising.
3. Lake Tahoe (1 hour 45 minutes)
The largest alpine lake in North America and the clearest large lake in the United States, sitting at 1,900 metres. Ski in winter, swim and hike in summer, and note that the north shore is quieter while the south has the casinos and the nightlife.
4. San Francisco (1 hour 45 minutes)
Close enough to be a Saturday and dense enough to be a week. Remember the fog: San Francisco summers are cold and grey because of coastal upwelling, so September and October are the warm months, not July.
5. Point Reyes National Seashore (2 hours 30 minutes)
A peninsula riding a different tectonic plate from the mainland, separated by the San Andreas fault. Elephant seals, a lighthouse at the windiest point on the Pacific coast, and some of the best oysters in California at Tomales Bay.
6. Monterey and Carmel (3 hours)
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is among the best in the world, built on the site of a sardine cannery. Seventeen-Mile Drive, Point Lobos and Carmel’s beach make a full weekend without ever getting on a motorway again.
7. Yosemite National Park (3 hours)
Tunnel View, El Capitan, Half Dome and Bridalveil Fall. The waterfalls peak with snowmelt in May and June and can dry up entirely by late summer, so time it deliberately. Tioga Road over the high country is closed by snow much of the year.
8. Lassen Volcanic National Park (3 hours)
All four types of volcano occur here, and the hydrothermal areas at Bumpass Hell are the largest outside Yellowstone. It is the least visited park within easy reach and usually has room when Yosemite does not.
9. Mendocino Coast (3 hours 30 minutes)
Headland villages above a rugged coast, redwoods behind, and far fewer people than Big Sur. Van Damme and Russian Gulch have the sea caves; the Skunk Train runs inland through the forest from Fort Bragg.
10. Mount Shasta (3 hours 30 minutes)
A 4,300-metre stratovolcano standing alone above the landscape, visible for a hundred miles. Castle Crags, McCloud Falls and the headwaters of the Sacramento River are all at its foot, and the area has a distinctly countercultural character.
11. Big Sur (4 hours)
The coast road south of Carmel, and one of the great drives anywhere. Landslides close sections of Highway 1 regularly and sometimes for long periods, so confirm the road is through before committing to a route.
12. Sequoia and Kings Canyon (4 hours 30 minutes)
The largest trees on earth by volume, including General Sherman. Kings Canyon next door is deeper than the Grand Canyon in places and sees a fraction of the visitors. A stretch weekend, best with three days.
Cheap weekend getaways from Sacramento by car
- An America the Beautiful pass pays for itself fast with Yosemite, Lassen, Sequoia and Kings Canyon all in range.
- Gold Country is inexpensive – the towns are free to walk and midweek lodging is cheap.
- Sonoma undercuts Napa substantially on both tasting fees and rooms for a very similar day.
- Tahoe in the shoulder months, May and October, costs a fraction of ski season or high summer.
Last-minute weekend getaways from Sacramento
- Lassen and Mount Shasta almost always have availability.
- Tahoe on a winter Saturday does not, and the I-80 and US-50 passes require chains or close entirely in storms – check conditions before setting off.
- Yosemite has used timed-entry reservations in peak periods; confirm the current requirement on the park’s own site rather than assuming.
- Wildfire smoke can affect the Sierra and the north state from July into October. Check air quality as well as the forecast.
