No American city is better placed for weekends than Salt Lake City. Four ski areas sit within forty minutes of downtown, the Great Salt Lake is on the doorstep, and all five of Utah’s national parks are a drivable Friday evening away. The constraint is not distance but season – the mountains and the desert are good at opposite times of year.
Ordered by drive time.
1. Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons (40 minutes)
Alta, Snowbird, Brighton and Solitude are all inside forty minutes of the city, which is the reason people move here. The snow is dry because the storms cross the Great Salt Lake and pick up moisture at altitude. In summer the same canyons are wildflower walks; Little Cottonwood is a granite climbing destination in its own right.
2. Park City (40 minutes)
The largest ski resort in the United States by area, a preserved silver-mining main street, and, historically, the Sundance Film Festival in January – though the festival is relocating to Boulder, Colorado from 2027, so check before planning around it. Summer brings alpine slides and a good mountain-bike network.
3. Antelope Island (50 minutes)
A causeway runs out into the Great Salt Lake to an island with a free-ranging bison herd, pronghorn and enormous skies. The lake’s salinity means no fish and vast clouds of brine flies in summer – go in spring or autumn, and stay for the sunset over the water.
4. Heber Valley and Midway (50 minutes)
A quieter alternative to Park City over the hill, with the Homestead Crater – a geothermal spring inside a limestone dome that you can swim and dive in year-round at around 35C. The valley itself is farmland ringed by mountains.
5. Sundance and Provo Canyon (1 hour)
Robert Redford’s mountain resort, small and deliberately understated, below Mount Timpanogos. Bridal Veil Falls is a short walk from the road, and Timpanogos Cave is a steep climb to a genuinely good cave system in summer.
6. Bear Lake (2 hours 15 minutes)
Turquoise because of suspended limestone, which makes it look Caribbean at 1,800 metres. The raspberry crop is the local obsession and the shakes are worth the stop. Warm enough to swim in high summer, and quiet the rest of the year.
7. Great Basin National Park, Nevada (3 hours 30 minutes)
One of the least visited national parks and among the darkest skies in the country. Lehman Caves, a road that climbs to 3,000 metres, and bristlecone pines that are among the oldest living things on earth. Go for the stars and expect to see almost no one.
8. Capitol Reef National Park (3 hours 30 minutes)
The quietest of Utah’s five, built around the Waterpocket Fold – a hundred-mile wrinkle in the earth’s crust. The historic Fruita orchards still let visitors pick fruit in season, which no other national park does.
9. Moab, Arches and Canyonlands (3 hours 45 minutes)
Two national parks from one base. Arches has the highest concentration of natural stone arches anywhere; Canyonlands is vast, quieter and better for a long view. Arches has used timed-entry reservations in peak season, so check the current requirement before you drive.
10. Bryce Canyon National Park (4 hours)
Not a canyon but an eroding amphitheatre of hoodoos, at 2,400 to 2,700 metres – high enough to be cold when Moab is baking. Winter here, with snow on orange rock, is the most striking version of it.
11. Zion National Park (4 hours 15 minutes)
The most visited park in Utah, entered from the canyon floor rather than the rim, which is what makes it feel enclosing. A shuttle runs the scenic drive in season. Angels Landing needs a lottery permit and the Narrows is a hike in the river, governed by flash-flood risk.
12. Jackson and Grand Teton (4 hours 30 minutes)
The Tetons rise straight from the valley floor with no foothills, which is why they photograph the way they do. Jackson is the base, Yellowstone is beyond, and the drive north through Idaho is straightforward. A stretch weekend, and better as three days.
Cheap weekend getaways from Salt Lake City by car
- The Cottonwood canyons cost nothing in summer – trailhead parking and a full day of alpine walking within forty minutes of downtown.
- An America the Beautiful pass pays for itself quickly here, given five national parks within four and a half hours.
- Antelope Island is a state park day fee and delivers bison and the lake for less than a tank of fuel.
- Camping is the cheap way to do the desert parks, and dispersed camping on BLM land around Moab is free.
Last-minute weekend getaways from Salt Lake City
- Avoid Park City during Sundance in January and Moab in spring without a booking – both sell out entirely.
- Season decides, not distance. The desert parks are best from March to May and September to November; the mountains from December to April and July to September.
- Check canyon road status in winter. Little Cottonwood closes for avalanche control with little notice and traction laws are enforced.
- Great Basin and Capitol Reef are the two that almost always have room, because almost nobody goes.
