First-Time Visitor Guide to Marrakech: The Medina Briefing

Marrakech is sensory overload, the medina is a maze, the hassle is real, the food is incredible. First-timers should stay inside the medina walls and learn the rules.

Arrival logistics

Marrakech Menara (RAK) is 6km from the medina — pre-arranged riad transfer (€10-15) is safest. Taxi from the rank should be 70 dirham fixed but drivers will quote 150+. Insist on meter or fixed.

Stay in a riad

Skip western hotels: book a riad inside the medina walls. Family-run, traditional courtyard, breakfast included, ~$40-80/night for good ones. They’ll send someone to fetch you from a landmark since GPS doesn’t work in the souks.

Souks survival

Always agree price BEFORE the tea is poured. Start at 30% of asking price. Don’t take photos without asking. If a ‘helpful’ local offers directions, they expect tip (50-100 dirham). Walk confidently like you know where you’re going.

Cultural respect

Dress modestly. Shoulders + knees covered for women in the medina (not required at riad pools). Friday is the holy day, some shops close. Ramadan changes everything, most cafes closed during daylight, but iftar feasts are spectacular.

First-timer mistakes

Drinking tap water. Tipping with credit card (cash only, small notes). Buying carpets on day 1 (wait, compare). Walking back to riad after dark in unfamiliar areas. Eating cart food on day 1 (let your stomach adjust).

Pro tip: Cash is king — ATMs in the medina exist but limit to 2,000 dirham. Bring USD/EUR to exchange at official bureaux (better rates than airport).
