April 2027 is the version of Italy most people are imagining, and an unusually clean one. Because Easter falls on 28 March in 2027, April arrives with no Holy Week crowd on it – and both of the national holidays that normally create a long weekend, 25 April and 1 May, land on a Saturday. Rome sits near 19°C, the coast reopens, and the country is green in a way it will not be again until October.
Why 2027 is a good April
In most years April carries Easter, and with it the single biggest domestic travel week of the Italian spring. In 2027 it does not: Easter Sunday is 28 March and Pasquetta is the 29th, so the crowds and the pricing happen in the month before.
The second piece of luck is the calendar. Liberation Day on Sunday 25 April and Labour Day on Saturday 1 May both fall at the weekend in 2027, so neither generates a ponte – the bridge weekend that normally empties Milan and fills every hill town between the two dates. Domestic travel stays moderate and rates stay reasonable in a window that is usually one of the worst of the spring.
Weather: the best walking weather of the year
- Rome and the centre – highs near 19°C, lows near 9°C, and about 70 mm of rain spread through the month. Warm enough for long days on your feet, cool enough that you will not suffer for it.
- Milan, the lakes and the north – highs in the high teens, with April showers that are genuinely April showers. The lakes come back to life this month.
- Sicily, Puglia and the south – low twenties, the best hiking and archaeology weather of the year, and wildflowers across the interior.
- The Alps – the high resorts ski into early or mid April; the passes and mountain roads open later.
What April is not is beach weather. Sea temperatures sit around 15–17°C even in the south, so the coast is for looking at and walking beside.
Milan Design Week: 12–18 April 2027
One date will decide whether Milan is possible in April. The Salone del Mobile, the furniture and design fair, runs 13 to 18 April 2027 at Rho Fiera, with Milan Design Week and the Fuorisalone taking over the city from 12 to 18 April under the theme “In Relazione”.
For that week Milan is effectively sold out: hotel rates multiply, restaurants need booking, and the city is full of people who are working. It is a remarkable week to be there if design is the point of your trip, and a week to avoid entirely if it is not. The fair is trade-only for its first days and opens to the general public on 17 and 18 April.
What reopens, and what is still finding its feet
Because Easter is early in 2027, seasonal Italy reopens early too. By April the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Ischia, Lake Como and Lake Garda and the Cinque Terre are all properly open, with full ferry timetables and most hotels trading.
That makes April one of the two or three best months for the coast and the lakes: everything is running, the weather is good, and the July crowds are three months away. Prices are noticeably below June.
Rome’s birthday, 21 April
The Natale di Roma marks the city’s legendary founding in 753 BC and falls on Wednesday 21 April 2027. Expect historical processions in costume, events at the Circus Maximus and around the Imperial Forums, and free or extended access at some municipal museums. It is a local celebration rather than a tourist set-piece, which is exactly what makes it worth catching.
No free museum Sunday from April
Worth knowing if you are used to the winter rules: the Ministry of Culture’s Domenica al Museo free first Sunday runs from October to March only. It does not operate in April. Book and pay for the Colosseum, the Uffizi and the Accademia as normal – and book early, because April is the month advance slots start selling out.
Prices and crowds
April is shoulder season moving towards high season. The first half is noticeably cheaper than the second, and the whole month is cheaper than May, June or September. The exceptions are Milan during Design Week and anywhere within reach of a long weekend at the very end of the month.

What to wear
Layers and a light waterproof. April in Italy gives you 22°C and sun and 12°C and rain in the same week, and the north and south can be five degrees apart. Comfortable shoes matter more this month than any other, because April is when you actually walk all day. Covered shoulders and knees are required in churches year-round, which is easier to manage in April than in August.
