Among Europe's safest capitals. Violent crime against tourists very rare. Solo female travelers consistently report Lisbon as comfortable. Real risks: pickpocketing on Tram 28 and crowded Baixa, steep cobbled streets slippery in rain. Walking at night in central districts is normal.
Making friends + community
Easy. Lisbon's expanding digital-nomad community + young backpacker scene + Erasmus-student culture make meeting people automatic. Try: Selina Secret Garden, Hub New Lisbon Hostel, Sunset Destination Hostel. The Bairro Alto bar scene is built for solo socializing.
Where to stay solo
Solo travelers do well in Baixa (central + transit-connected), Chiado (slightly upscale but still solo-friendly), or Bairro Alto (party-adjacent). Avoid touristy Belém for stays (better as day-trip).
Eating alone
Solo dining is normal at tascas (traditional Portuguese family restaurants) and at Time Out Market food halls. Bifana sandwiches at standing counters are perfect quick solo meals.
