Best Father’s Day Weekend Getaways 2027: Where to Go 18-20 June

Reviewed September 2026

5 min read·Updated Sep 2026

Father's Day 2027 falls on Sunday 20 June in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada, giving a full summer weekend from Friday the 18th. It also sits right on the summer solstice, which means the longest daylight of the year - a genuine advantage for anything outdoors. The getaways that work are almost always built around doing something specific rather than going somewhere nice, so this list is organised by activity.

The solstice advantage nobody plans for

Father's Day 2027 is on 20 June, and the June solstice is the same weekend. At the latitude of Scotland or the northern United States that means genuinely long evenings - light until well after 10pm in the Highlands and past 9pm across the northern US and Canada. Every outdoor plan gets an extra two or three usable hours.

That changes what a two-night trip can contain. A round of golf after dinner in Scotland, a full evening hike in the Tetons, a river float in Bend at 8pm - all of those work in late June and in almost no other month. If the weekend is going to be built around an activity, the solstice is the argument for doing it now rather than in May or September.

Driving weekends

The Blue Ridge Parkway is the classic American Father's Day drive: 755km of ridge-top road with no commercial traffic, and in late June the rhododendron and mountain laurel are in flower at elevation while the valleys below are already hot. Base at either end - Asheville in the south, Roanoke or Charlottesville in the north - and drive a section rather than the whole thing.

Elsewhere, the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park usually opens fully in late June depending on snow clearing, and the timing is genuinely uncertain year to year, so check the park's own opening status rather than assuming. In the UK, the North Coast 500 in Scotland is at its best for daylight now, though it is also entering its busy season.

Activity weekends: fishing, golf and beer

Golf. St Andrews and the Fife coast in late June give you the most daylight of the year on some of the oldest courses in the sport. Old Course tee times are allocated by ballot and need planning; the neighbouring courses - Kingsbarns, Crail, Elie - are easier to book and just as good a day out.

Fishing and water. Door County in Wisconsin, the Finger Lakes in New York and the Deschutes river around Bend, Oregon are all in their best window: warm enough, long days, and before the July crowds. Bend in particular combines rivers, mountain biking and one of the densest brewery scenes in the United States within a small radius.

Breweries and food. Asheville and Nashville are the two southern cities that reward a long weekend on food and music alone, and both are more comfortable in June than in July or August. Nashville's festival season is running and the city is walkable in a way that matters when the temperature is in the high twenties rather than the mid-thirties.

How to book a June weekend that is not a disaster

Late June is the start of the northern summer season, which means three practical constraints. School holidays in much of the United States have already begun, so national park accommodation and campsites for 18-20 June 2027 should be booked as soon as the reservation window opens - for the US national parks that is typically six months ahead, to the day.

Second, Father's Day is the second-busiest restaurant day of the American year after Mother's Day. If a meal is part of the plan, book it when reservations open rather than the week before.

Third, in Scotland and the north of England, late June is before the midge season peaks in July and August, which is a real and underrated advantage. Going three weeks later is a materially worse experience for the same scenery.
