When the Deutschland-Ticket beats a single fare, and when it doesn't
Before buying point-to-point tickets, work out whether the monthly Deutschland-Ticket pays for itself on a single packed day. At 58 euros a month (rising to 63 euros from January 2026), it covers every RB, RE and S-Bahn ride nationwide, so Potsdam (S7), Sachsenhausen (S1), and even Wittenberg by RE trade the per-trip charges for a flat rate. The trap is Dresden: the fast ICE that does it in under two hours is long-distance and not covered, so you either pay the separate ICE fare (often 18-40 euros booked ahead) or ride a slower regional combination of about 2 hours 10 to 2 hours 30 each way to stay on the ticket. Note also the Brandenburg-Berlin-Ticket reaches Wittenberg but stops at the Saxony border, so it does not get you to Dresden either. If two or more people travel together for just one trip, that group day ticket usually beats the monthly pass; for a solo traveler doing three or four regional outings in a month, the Deutschland-Ticket wins outright.
