The Cesky Krumlov train trap most people fall into
Cesky Krumlov ranks as the best day trip from Prague, but the train will sabotage you if you do not check the timetable. There is only one direct train, leaving Prague hlavni nadrazi at 09:20 and arriving at 11:49, and on weekdays the only direct train back departs Cesky Krumlov around 14:07. That leaves barely two hours in town before you have to turn around, which is not enough for the castle and the Old Town.
Take the bus instead. RegioJet runs from Prague Na Knizeci roughly every three hours, takes about 2h25, and costs around 239 CZK (10 euro) each way, so you can leave early and come back late on your own schedule. Reserve a seat online in summer because the popular departures sell out. The trip to skip when you are short on days is Karlovy Vary: the spa colonnades are pretty, but two hours each way for a town you can see in ninety minutes is a poor trade against Kutna Hora, which is one hour by train and packs in the Sedlec bone church and a UNESCO old town.
