How to Make Friends While Slow Traveling

Slow travel without community = lonely fast. Here’s how to actually meet people + build friendships abroad.

Join structured groups

Co-working spaces (best for nomad community + structured events). Language schools (built-in cohort + cultural exposure). Sports leagues (running clubs, climbing gyms, yoga studios, surf schools). Cooking classes + tour groups (small groups + shared experiences).

Use apps strategically

Bumble BFF (friend mode, not dating) + Meetup.com (events) + Couchsurfing Events (not stays, events). Internations (expat-focused). Facebook Groups: ‘[City] Digital Nomads’ or ‘[City] Expats’ — events posted weekly.

Be consistent with one place

Pick ONE cafe you visit daily: staff know you in 5 days, regulars in 10 days. Pick ONE gym or yoga studio. Friendships form through routine. Don’t bounce between 8 cafes searching for ‘the best one’.

Host or accept invitations

Host dinners in your Airbnb (4-8 people, cook a simple thing). Accept ALL invitations the first month, even ones you’d normally decline. Bring something (wine, dessert, story) when invited. Reciprocate within a week.

Mix nomads + locals

Don’t stay in nomad-only bubbles. Befriend 1-2 locals minimum per city. Practice the local language even if locals speak English — it transforms relationships from ‘tourist’ to ‘visitor invested in our city’. Local friends = deeper experience + insider knowledge.

Pro tip: Have ONE ‘going out’ day per week minimum where you commit to talking to at least 3 strangers: at a coffee shop, gym, market, language meetup. Treat it as a habit, not a hope. Most friendships start with ‘small first conversations’ that compound over weeks.
