Things to Do in Massachusetts: What Is Actually Worth Your Time
Quick answer: This is an honest look at Massachusetts: what the Freedom Trail actually costs, and the museum worth planning your date around.

The Freedom Trail is the thing everyone books a tour for, and most of it does not need one. The route is a marked line in the pavement, most sites along it charge nothing, and of the handful that do, tickets are generally available on the day rather than requiring advance booking. Walking it yourself with a map costs nothing and moves at your own pace.
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is the one worth timing. Built around a courtyard garden and hung exactly as Gardner left it, admission is free for anyone under 18, free on your birthday, and discounted if you turn up wearing Red Sox kit — a genuinely unusual set of doors into a collection of this quality.
- If your trip includes a birthday, plan the Gardner for that day. The free-on-your-birthday policy is not widely advertised.
