Things to Do in San Francisco: What Is Actually Worth Your Time
Quick answer: This is an honest look at San Francisco: which popular attraction to think twice about, what to do with that time instead, and the spot most visitors never reach. It also covers the transit and money moves that save the most hassle.

Skip Fisherman’s Wharf. Once the sea lions have barked and you’ve photographed the bay, the souvenir stalls and overpriced clam chowder stop earning your hours. Walk south along the Embarcadero to the Ferry Building Marketplace instead, where the same waterfront comes with food that locals actually eat. Sit at the bar at Hog Island Oyster Co. for Tomales Bay oysters with floor-to-ceiling bay views, then time your visit for the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, which runs Saturdays from around 8am to 2pm (with smaller Tuesday and Thursday markets year-round).

The pick most visitors miss is Lands End, on the city’s northwest tip. The Coastal Trail runs roughly 1.5 miles one-way past the ruins of the Sutro Baths, an 1896 saltwater bathhouse, with cliff-top Golden Gate Bridge views the whole way. Parking and entry are free.
One smart move: book Alcatraz early. Alcatraz City Cruises out of Pier 33 is the only authorized operator, tickets open about 90 days ahead, and summer sailings routinely sell out a week or more in advance. Lock in your date before you book flights, not after you land.
