February is the driest month of the Amsterdam winter and the one with the coldest nights. About 7°C by day, rain on roughly 14 days rather than January’s 17, and daylight stretching back past 17:30 by the end of the month. The Light Festival has gone, which is exactly why prices stay at their floor.
The weather, precisely
February gives you two things January does not: less rain and noticeably more light. Amsterdam gains about two hours of daylight across the month, and by the end of February the sun is setting after 18:00.
What it also gives you is the coldest nights of the year and the rawest wind. There is no shelter in a flat city, and a still 3°C and a windy 3°C are entirely different experiences. Occasional cold snaps bring frost and the odd snowfall, which rarely settles long.
Carnival is not an Amsterdam thing
Worth saying plainly, because it catches people out. Dutch Carnival – running the three days before Lent, 7 to 9 February in 2027 – is a genuinely enormous celebration in the southern provinces: Maastricht, Den Bosch, Breda, Eindhoven. Whole cities in costume for three days.
In Amsterdam it barely registers. There are themed nights in bars and not much else. If Carnival is what you have come for, you need a train to Maastricht (about two and a half hours) or Den Bosch (about an hour), and accommodation there books out far in advance.
Krokusvakantie
Dutch schools take a week-long krokusvakantie – the spring half-term – in mid-to-late February, staggered across three regions so it spreads over a fortnight. Its effect on a visitor is specific and easy to plan around:
- Museums, NEMO, the zoo and family attractions get busy, and the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum lose their winter calm.
- Hotel rates tick up for those weeks.
- Everything else is unaffected.
If you are choosing February dates, the first week is the quietest of the month.
What February is good for
- The big three museums – Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Anne Frank House – still at near-winter availability outside krokusvakantie. The Anne Frank House remains timed-entry and online-only and must be booked whatever the month.
- Brown cafes. The old wood-panelled bars of the Jordaan and the centre are a February institution rather than a novelty.

Prices and crowds

What to pack
A hooded, windproof waterproof, layers, gloves and a hat. Shoes that handle wet. No umbrella – the wind will take it. If you are cycling, waterproof trousers and gloves make the difference between enjoyable and miserable.
