May is the best all-round month in Amsterdam: about 18°C, light until after 21:30, terraces full and the canals finally worth being on. It also carries the most significant pair of dates in the Dutch year – Remembrance Day on 4 May and Liberation Day on 5 May – which are worth understanding before you arrive, because the first of them stops the entire country.
The weather, precisely
May is warm enough for the outdoor city without being hot, and the evenings are the point: sunset moves past 21:30 by the end of the month. Rain is about 58 mm across 13 days, so showers rather than washouts.
The wind still matters. On the water – a canal cruise, a day at the coast, cycling out to the Waterland villages – it will be noticeably cooler than the forecast.
4 May: Remembrance Day
Dodenherdenking commemorates Dutch civilians and servicemen who died in wars since the Second World War. It is not a public holiday, but it is the most solemn moment in the Dutch calendar and visitors should know what happens.
- At 20:00 the entire country observes two minutes of silence. It is genuinely total. Trams and buses stop where they are, traffic halts, bars and restaurants pause service, television broadcasts fall silent.
- The national ceremony is at the National Monument on Dam Square, attended by the King and Queen, with a wreath-laying before the silence. The square is closed and full; people gather from late afternoon.
- If you are out at 20:00, stop and stand still. Continuing to walk, talk or film through it reads as a serious discourtesy.
Flags fly at half-mast from 18:00 until sunset.
5 May: Liberation Day
Bevrijdingsdag marks the end of the German occupation in 1945, and its tone is the exact opposite of the evening before. In 2027 it falls on a Wednesday.
Fourteen cities across the Netherlands hold free bevrijdingsfestivals – large open-air music festivals running all day, Amsterdam’s traditionally in and around the Museumplein and Vondelpark area. They are free to enter and very busy.
One quirk worth knowing: for most Dutch workers 5 May is only an official day off every five years (2025, 2030), so in an ordinary year like 2027 it is a normal working day with a festival attached. Shops and museums stay open.
The end of the tulips
Keukenhof closes in mid-May, with the exact date announced annually. The first week to ten days of May are the last chance, and the garden is often at its fullest and least photographed then – late tulips, alliums and the last of the displays.
The bulb fields of the Bollenstreek finish around the same time, and are cut once the flower has served its purpose. By late May the landscape is green again.
Two more public holidays
- Thursday 6 May – Hemelvaartsdag (Ascension Day), a public holiday. Because it is a Thursday, many Dutch workers take the Friday too, making a four-day weekend. Expect busy trains and full coastal and countryside accommodation, and a quiet city on the Thursday.
- Sunday 16 and Monday 17 May – Pinksteren (Whitsun). Whit Monday is a public holiday in the Netherlands – banks and offices closed, Sunday transport timetable, many shops open.
What May is for
- The canals, properly. Boat rentals, cruises and the first of the season on the water.
- Cycling out of the city – Waterland, Durgerdam, the Amsterdamse Bos – which is genuinely pleasant for the first time since autumn.
- Terraces, which take over the squares.
- The museums, still busy but no longer at Easter or King’s Day levels. The Anne Frank House is timed-entry and online-only year-round.
Prices and crowds

Layers and a light windproof jacket – you will want it on the water and in the evenings. Sunglasses. Comfortable shoes, and if you are cycling, something you do not mind being rained on for twenty minutes.
