October is the last month of the French shoulder season and, for cities and food, one of the most rewarding. Paris drops to about 17°C, the vines turn gold in Burgundy and Alsace, the mushroom and game season opens, the clocks go back at the end of the month and the light turns low and long. It is quiet, cheap and – as long as you are not chasing a beach – very good value.
Autumn colour and the wine country
October is when French vineyards look their best. After the September harvest, the leaves turn through October, and Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, Alsace’s Route des Vins and the Loire are all gold and red with almost no visitors. Tasting rooms are open, the producers have finished the harvest and have time to talk, and rooms are cheap.
The forests do the same. The Vosges, the Jura, the Morvan and the Fontainebleau forest outside Paris all turn through the month, and French autumn walking is genuinely underrated.

- Paris and the north – about 17°C by day and 10°C at night, with roughly 55 mm of rain. Mild, damp and often beautiful; the low autumn light on Haussmann stone is the best of the year.
- Provence and the Riviera – 21–22°C and still pleasant, though October is a wet month on the Mediterranean coast, with heavy autumn storms – the épisodes cévenols – possible in the Gard, Hérault and Ardèche.
- Bordeaux and the south-west – mild and golden; one of the best regions to be in.
- Brittany and Normandy – mild, wet and windy, with Atlantic storms returning.
- The Alps – between seasons: the hiking is ending, the lifts are closed, and the ski season has not started. Most resorts are shut.
The clocks go back
France returns to winter time on the last Sunday of October, and the change is abrupt: the evenings suddenly end at around 18:00. It is worth planning the last week of October around daylight – outdoor things earlier, indoor things later – because the difference either side of that Sunday is striking.
The best eating starts
October opens the French autumn table:
- Mushrooms – cèpes above all, on menus across the south-west, the Auvergne and the Landes.
- Game – the hunting season opens in September and by October venison, wild boar and partridge are on menus. A practical note: if you are walking in rural France at weekends in autumn, wear something bright, as hunting takes place in many forests.
- Oysters and shellfish – the cold months are their season, on the Atlantic coast and in every brasserie.
- New wine – cellars open, and the first tastings of the year’s vintage.
- Chestnuts – roasted on street corners from mid-October in the Ardèche, the Cévennes and Corsica, where they are a staple rather than a snack.

What is closing
Seasonal France shuts through October. Coastal Brittany, Normandy and the smaller Riviera towns wind down; many Loire châteaux move to reduced winter hours from about the start of November; and Alpine resorts are closed between the hiking and ski seasons. The cities are entirely unaffected.
Prices and crowds
Low throughout, apart from the French autumn half-term school holidays, which run for two weeks across the zones from late October and lift demand in the countryside and at family attractions. Paris hotel rates stay moderate because of the business season.
