What makes October 2028 different

1. Nepal
The monsoon washes the air clean and October delivers the most dependable mountain views of the year, with settled weather and comfortable daytime temperatures. Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit and the Langtang valley are all at their peak, which also means their busiest - book teahouses through an agency for the middle two weeks or start a few days earlier or later. Kathmandu and Pokhara are warm and dry. Permits and TIMS cards are required and easiest to arrange in Kathmandu.

Autumn colour starts in Hokkaido and the high Japanese Alps in early October and works south, reaching Kyoto and Tokyo in late November - so October is the month for the mountains rather than the famous temple gardens. Kamikochi, Nikko and the Tohoku region are at their best. Typhoon risk has largely passed, the humidity is gone, and this is the most comfortable month of the Japanese year for walking.
3. New England, USA
Peak foliage runs roughly from the first week of October in northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine to mid-month further south in Massachusetts and Connecticut, though it moves by a week or more each year with the weather. Weekend accommodation on the Kancamagus and in the Berkshires is booked far ahead and priced accordingly; midweek is both cheaper and dramatically less crowded on the roads, which is the thing that actually ruins a foliage trip.
4. Morocco
October returns Morocco to comfortable: Marrakech in the mid-twenties, the Atlas passes clear, and the desert around Merzouga and Zagora warm by day without the punishing summer heat. The Atlantic coast at Essaouira is windy year-round and pleasant now. This is one of the two best months for the Toubkal trekking circuits, the other being April and May.

After March to May, October is Jordan's best window - low to mid twenties by day, cold desert nights, and the Jordan Trail's autumn through-hiking season. Petra needs two days rather than one; the Monastery and the High Place of Sacrifice each take a half-day. Wadi Rum is at its most comfortable for overnight camps, and the Dead Sea is warm without being oppressive.
6. Cappadocia, Turkey
Balloon flights are cancelled for wind far more often than most visitors expect, and September and October are the two most reliable months of the year. Book for your first morning so you have spare days if it is called off. The valleys - Rose, Red, Ihlara - are at their best for walking now, and the wider Turkish coast still holds warm sea into the middle of the month.
7. Rajasthan, India
The monsoon has cleared, the landscape is still green, and temperatures have dropped from unbearable to merely hot. Diwali around 17 October is the reason to time it precisely - Jaipur in particular lights up, and Udaipur's lake setting works beautifully for it. The corollary is that Indian domestic travel peaks in the same week, so book trains and internal flights well ahead.
8. Cape Town and the Western Cape
October is Cape spring: wildflowers in Namaqualand and the West Coast National Park usually peak in August and September but run into October in a good year, southern right whales are still off Hermanus until about November, and the summer south-easter has not yet started blowing hard. Table Mountain is far more likely to be open than in January. The winelands are green and quiet before the summer season.
