How to choose between them: which atoll and which kind of island?

Choose the atoll and the type of island before choosing the villa. The Maldives is made up of 26 coral atolls holding roughly 1,190 islands, and nearly every resort occupies an island of its own, so that single decision settles the transfer, the nightly rate, whether alcohol is served and whether there is anywhere at all to walk to in the evening.

Couples who want seclusion above everything else are better served by an outer-atoll resort island reached by seaplane, where the nearest neighbouring property is far off and the house reef is not shared. Couples on a shorter trip should stay within speedboat range of Male instead, since a four-night stay gives up too much to a long transfer at each end. Divers and snorkellers should pick by reef and channel access rather than by villa type, because a strong house reef removes the need for a boat every morning.

By budget tier the split is clean. A guesthouse on an inhabited island such as Maafushi in South Male Atoll, about half an hour by speedboat from the airport, puts the same lagoon within reach at a small fraction of a resort rate, with excursions bought on the island. A middle tier of resort islands sits close enough to Male for a speedboat, which keeps the transfer both short and cheap. The upper tier is the seaplane belt across the outer atolls, where the transfer alone can outweigh several nights of accommodation lower down the scale.

When to go and what the catch is

Aim for the northeast monsoon, the iruvai, which runs roughly December to April and brings the settled skies and flat water the islands are sold on. February and March are the driest months of the year. The southwest monsoon, the hulhangu, runs from about mid-May through November with more cloud, stronger winds and the heaviest average rainfall of the year around May and November.

The catch is that the dry months are exactly the ones every honeymoon is booked into, so rates and seaplane seats are at their tightest from around late December to March. Wet-season travel is not a write-off: rain in the Maldives usually arrives in heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzle, and the reef between them looks no different. What genuinely degrades is the sea state, and that governs long speedboat transfers and whether excursions run on the day at all.

Rainfall also varies along the chain rather than being uniform, increasing from north to south: southern atolls average well over 2,200 mm a year against under 1,800 mm in the north. A shoulder-month trip to a southern atoll is therefore a different bet from the same dates in the north, which is worth knowing before a resort is picked purely on photographs.

Booking mistakes people make

The transfer is the most misjudged line on any Maldives booking. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, with no night operations, and the last departures of the day leave in the afternoon, so an international flight that lands late cannot connect onward and the first night gets spent in Male or Hulhumale at the traveller's own expense. Confirming the resort before checking the arrival time against that cut-off is the costliest error made at the booking stage.

Four more worth checking before paying:

• Establish whether the quoted transfer is per person and whether it is one way or return. On a seaplane-belt resort it can be a large share of the total, and a domestic flight plus speedboat, at roughly 60 to 150 minutes combined, is often the cheaper and later-running alternative.
• Compare all-inclusive against half board honestly. A resort island has no other restaurants, so half board on a remote island means paying resort rates for every lunch and every drink.
• Do not assume alcohol. It is banned on inhabited local islands and cannot be brought into the country at all, so a guesthouse stay means going without or using a licensed boat moored offshore.
• Read the local-island etiquette in advance. On inhabited islands shoulders and knees are covered away from the water, and swimwear is limited to a designated bikini beach.
