Planning an Italy honeymoon
Italy is made for honeymoons — the question is which region. The favorites: the Amalfi Coast (cliffs, lemon groves, Positano), Tuscany (vineyards, hilltop towns), Venice (canals and gondolas), and Lake Como (alpine glamour).
When to go
May-June and September are ideal — warm, romantic and pre/post the August crush. Avoid peak August heat and crowds on the coast.
A classic 7-night split
3 nights Amalfi (Positano or Ravello) + 3 nights Tuscany or Venice, linked by fast train. Add Lake Como if flying into Milan.
Romantic experiences
A private boat along the Amalfi Coast, a Tuscan vineyard dinner, a sunset gondola in Venice, and a lakeside villa aperitivo on Como.
Costs: a mid-to-upscale Italian honeymoon runs $250-450/day per couple; the Amalfi Coast and Como sit at the higher end. See the Travel Cost Index.
How to Connect Your Honeymoon Regions by Train
The six romantic regions look easy to string together until you check the map, because they sit at opposite ends of the country and not all are reachable by a single train. Plan the routing first, then book hotels, or you will lose days to backtracking.
The high-speed Frecciarossa and Italo trains do the heavy lifting between the big anchors. Venice to Florence runs around two hours, and Milan to Venice is roughly two and a half, so the northern leg is genuinely fast. Lake Como is a short hop from Milan: regional and EuroCity trains reach Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes, making Como an easy add-on to a Milan arrival rather than a separate expedition.
Two regions need a transfer plan:
- Cinque Terre has no high-speed station of its own. Take a fast train to La Spezia, then switch to the local Cinque Terre Express that links the five villages along the coast.
- The Amalfi Coast has no train at all. The smoothest approach is a high-speed train from Rome or Naples to Salerno (about an hour and a half from Rome), then a 30 to 45 minute ferry to Amalfi, which skips the notorious coastal-road traffic.
A realistic honeymoon route runs north to south once: Venice, then Florence or Tuscany, then down to the Amalfi Coast via Salerno. Trying to fold in Lake Como and Cinque Terre on the same trip means a lot of railway time, so most couples pick the north or the south, not both.
