Things to Do in Edinburgh: What Is Actually Worth Your Time
Quick answer: This is an honest look at what is genuinely worth your time in Edinburgh, including the spot most visitors never reach. It also covers the transit and money moves that save the most hassle.

If you are paying around £21.50 for an Edinburgh Castle ticket purely for the panorama, reconsider. The castle interior and Crown Jewels justify the fee, but the view you came for is better, and free, from the Level 7 roof terrace of the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street, which looks straight across at the castle rather than out from it. Calton Hill does the same job: free, open round the clock, and roughly a five-minute climb off the east end of Princes Street.

The pick most visitors walk past is Dean Village and the Water of Leith Walkway. This former milling hamlet sits under five minutes from the city centre yet trades bagpipes and crowds for cobbles, stone bridges and river quiet.
One smart move on the things you do book:
- Reserve Edinburgh Castle and The Real Mary King’s Close online in advance. Both run timed entry, both sell out in summer, and the gate price runs higher than the online rate.
