Best areas to stay in Santorini
The postcard village — whitewashed houses, blue domes and the world-famous sunset. Stunning and the most expensive; book caldera-view rooms months ahead.
The lively capital and transport hub, with caldera views, nightlife, shops and bus links everywhere. Central and slightly better value than Oia.
Between Fira and Oia on the highest point of the caldera — quieter, romantic and full of luxury suites with the same epic views.
Black-sand beach towns on the flat side of the island — no caldera view, but far cheaper, with tavernas and easy beach days.

Getting around
Santorini is small but hilly; buses run from Fira to most villages and beaches, but a rental car or ATV makes caldera-hopping far easier. Pre-book airport/port transfers — taxis are scarce in peak season.

Where to stay in Santorini: the best areas
- Oia — the famous sunsets and most romantic (and priciest) caldera views.
- Fira — the lively capital, central with nightlife and caldera views.
- Imerovigli — quieter, upscale, with the best caldera vistas.
- Kamari & Perissa — black-sand beaches and far better value (no caldera view).
For the iconic views splurge on the caldera (Oia/Imerovigli); for value and beaches, choose Kamari or Perissa.
The caldera “stairs tax” nobody warns you about
The caldera villages have a catch that doesn’t show up in the listing photos: most cliff-edge hotels in Oia and Imerovigli have no road access to the actual room. Your taxi drops you at a road, and then it’s steps. Imerovigli sits on the highest point of the rim, so a caldera suite there can mean a few hundred stairs between you and your luggage. Some properties (On The Rocks is one) send a porter to carry bags up and down, but plenty don’t, so ask before you book how many steps separate the room from the road, reception, and breakfast. From Fira down to the old port it’s the famous 587 Karavolades steps, walked, ridden by donkey, or taken by cable car.
If steps or knees are a concern, Firostefani is the smart compromise. It’s a flat, roughly 10-minute walk from Fira’s restaurants and buses, the caldera view is nearly as good, and cave suites run noticeably cheaper, with Firostefani hotels starting around $66 a night versus the steep premiums in Oia. You give up Oia’s postcard sunset crowd, which is honestly a feature, not a bug.
