The weather, precisely
Statistically August is July with more rain – about 86 mm against 78 mm, on a similar number of days. It arrives as heavy showers and thunderstorms. Evenings shorten noticeably through the month: by 31 August the sun sets around 20:30, an hour and a half earlier than at the solstice.
Pride Amsterdam and the Canal Parade
Pride Amsterdam runs for around nine days at the start of the month, and its centrepiece is the Canal Parade – traditionally the first Saturday of August, 7 August in 2027. Dates are confirmed annually.
What makes it distinctive is that it happens on the water: around eighty decorated boats travel the Prinsengracht and the Amstel while several hundred thousand people watch from the bridges and quaysides. There is no other Pride parade like it.

The Grachtenfestival
The Canal Festival runs for about ten days in mid-August, staging classical and jazz concerts in courtyards, canal houses, churches and on the water across the city. Many performances are free or cheap, and it is aimed squarely at people who live here.
Its best-known event is the Prinsengracht Concert, performed from a floating stage on the canal outside the Pulitzer hotel and broadcast nationally – traditionally on a Saturday in the second half of August. The canal banks are free to stand on and fill early.
The Uitmarkt
At the end of August, the Uitmarkt opens the Dutch cultural season with a free weekend of previews – theatre, dance, opera, music and literature – across open-air stages and venues. It is entirely free, it is enormous, and it is one of the best-value weekends in the Amsterdam year.
Prices and crowds
Peak season for the first three weeks, with Pride weekend as the sharpest spike of the whole year. From about the last week of August, Dutch schools return and the crowds start to thin while the weather holds – the beginning of the good late-summer window that runs into September. What to pack
Summer clothing and a proper waterproof – August is the wettest summer month. A layer for the evenings, which cool from mid-month. Sunglasses, comfortable shoes, a refillable bottle. If you are coming for Pride, something you do not mind getting rained on while standing on a bridge for three hours.
