October is the wettest month of the Amsterdam year – about 90 mm on 16 days – and the month the city turns inward. About 15°C, the clocks go back on 31 October, and the brown cafes come into their own. It is also, for five days in the middle, the electronic music capital of the world.
The weather, precisely
Rain on sixteen days out of thirty-one is the defining statistic. It is still Amsterdam rain – showers and drizzle driven sideways by wind rather than tropical downpours – but you should plan on getting wet at some point on most days, and on the wind making umbrellas pointless.
The clocks go back on Sunday 31 October 2027, and the effect is abrupt: sunset drops from about 18:00 to around 17:00 overnight, and the dark half of the Amsterdam year begins.
Amsterdam Dance Event
ADE is normally held over five days in mid-October and is the largest electronic music event in the world – well over a thousand events across a few hundred venues, a daytime conference programme, and several hundred thousand attendees.
- Hotel rates spike hard across the whole city for ADE week, and rooms sell out. This is the one thing to check before booking any October trip, whether or not you care about the music.
- Much of it is ticketed separately, venue by venue, rather than as one festival pass.
- The daytime programme – talks, labs, record fairs – is a genuine part of it, not just an add-on to the nights.
- Dates are announced annually.

What October is good for
- Autumn colour in the Vondelpark, the Amsterdamse Bos and along the Amstel – peaking mid-to-late October.
- Brown cafes. The wood-panelled, low-lit old bars of the Jordaan and the centre exist for exactly this weather, and gezelligheid is not a marketing word in October.
- Museums without summer queues – outside ADE week and the school holiday. The Anne Frank House still needs booking as it does all year.
- Day trips to Haarlem, Utrecht and Leiden, all quiet and all under an hour.
The Dutch herfstvakantie autumn school holiday falls in the second half of October, staggered by region, which lifts museum and family-attraction crowds for a week or so.
Prices and crowds
Shoulder to low season, and rates fall through the month – except for ADE week, when they go the other way entirely. Early October and the very end of the month are the good value windows. The tourist tax of around 12.5% applies on the room rate year-round. See what a trip to the Netherlands costs.
What to pack
A genuinely waterproof, windproof, hooded jacket – this is the month it matters most, and it is the single most useful thing you can bring. Layers, and shoes that cope with wet. Leave the umbrella at home. If you are cycling, waterproof trousers stop being optional.
