September is June’s equal on the other side of summer: about 20°C, the terraces still out, and the July and August crowds gone with the school holidays. It also carries the single best free thing Amsterdam does all year – Open Monumentendag, when buildings that are shut for the other 363 days open their doors.
The weather, precisely
September slopes downward but gently. The first fortnight often still feels like summer – low twenties, long evenings, outdoor dining. The second half turns autumnal, with sunset falling back to about 19:45 by the 30th and the first properly cold nights.
Rain is about 82 mm on 15 days, so it is wetter than midsummer. As always in Amsterdam it is frequency, not volume: showers and wind rather than downpours.
Open Monumentendag
On the second weekend of September, the Netherlands holds Open Monumentendag – Heritage Days – and several thousand listed buildings across the country open to the public free of charge.
In Amsterdam that means canal houses, hidden churches, almshouse courtyards, warehouses, guild halls and private interiors that are normally closed entirely. It is the one weekend you can get inside the canal belt rather than photographing its facades, and it costs nothing.
- The programme is published shortly beforehand and lists exactly which buildings open and when.
- Popular buildings queue – go early and pick a small number rather than trying to do everything.
- It pairs naturally with the Jordaan Festival, the neighbourhood’s own street festival, usually held the same weekend.
Why September works
- The crowds have gone. Dutch and most European schools went back in late August or the first days of September, and the difference in the canal belt is immediate.
- The weather holds for the first two or three weeks – genuinely usable terrace and cycling conditions.
- Museum slots open up. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum become bookable at short notice again. The Anne Frank House remains timed-entry and online-only, as it is all year.
- Rates ease from the August peak, though the tourist tax of around 12.5% still applies on the room rate.
Prinsjesdag
On the third Tuesday of September – 21 September in 2027 – the Dutch parliamentary year opens with Prinsjesdag: the King delivers the speech from the throne and travels in procession. It happens in The Hague, not Amsterdam, about an hour away by train, and it is a genuine piece of national pageantry if you want a day trip with a reason.
