September is the other month people miss. The dry season is still running – about 15 mm at Cusco – the June-to-August crowds have gone, and Cusco is at its warmest of the year by day at 19°C. It is the mirror of April: peak conditions without peak pricing, on the other side of the season.
The weather, precisely
The Andean dry season runs roughly May to September, and September is its last full month. Days are clear and warm, nights are cold, and the rain is minimal. Cusco’s daytime high peaks now because the dry-season sun is strong and the air is thin – not because summer has arrived.
Note the coincidence in the figure: Lima and Cusco are both at 19°C in September, for completely different reasons. Lima is at the tail of its grey winter; Cusco is at its brightest.
Why September works
- Inca Trail permits open up. The June-to-August rush is over and September availability is far better, for the same dry conditions.
- Machu Picchu is quieter and prices ease from the peak.
- Clear skies for the high routes – Rainbow Mountain, the Salkantay pass, Ausangate. Views are reliable in a way they simply are not from December to March.
- The Amazon is at low water, which flips the experience: river beaches appear, forest trails are walkable, and land-based wildlife viewing and fishing are at their best. High-water season is better by boat; low water is better on foot.
- Spring in the southern hemisphere – the Andes begin to flower again.
The cold nights

The thing dry-season visitors underestimate. Clear skies at 3,400 m mean heat escapes fast after dark: Cusco nights fall to around 6°C in September, and on the Inca Trail or at Ausangate you will be well below freezing. Many Cusco guesthouses have no central heating. Pack for the night, not the afternoon.
The rest of the country
- Lima – the garúa is beginning to lift but September is still a grey month on the coast. It clears properly in November.
- Lake Titicaca – clear, cold and beautiful; Puno at 3,800 m needs the same care as Cusco.
- The Sacred Valley – drier and browner than April, with excellent light.
Altitude
Cusco about 3,400 m, Puno about 3,800 m, Rainbow Mountain above 5,000 m. Altitude sickness is common and unrelated to fitness. Arrive gently, rest the first day, drink plenty of water, moderate alcohol, and consider sleeping lower in the Sacred Valley first. Worsening symptoms mean descending. Consult a doctor or travel clinic before travelling, particularly with any heart or lung condition or if pregnant.
Prices and crowds

What to pack
Layers, and genuinely warm clothing for the nights. Strong sun protection – dry-season UV at altitude is severe and people burn badly in September. Lip balm and moisturiser; the dry-season air is very dry. Broken-in boots. Insect repellent for the Amazon.
