The 3-week backpacking route: Mexico City to the Caribbean
The classic southern loop strings together the country’s best cities, ruins, and beaches in a logical line, so you almost never double back. Three weeks is the sweet spot; two feels rushed once bus times get added in.
- Mexico City (Days 1-4): Base in Roma or Condesa. Hit the Zocalo, Teotihuacan pyramids, and a day trip to colorful Coyoacan.
- Oaxaca (Days 5-8): A 7-hour ADO bus from TAPO terminal (around $47). Mezcal, mole, Monte Alban ruins, and the petrified waterfalls at Hierve el Agua.
- San Cristobal de las Casas (Days 9-12): Take the overnight bus (roughly 11-12 hours, departing 5:30-10:30pm). Cool highland air, indigenous markets, Sumidero Canyon.
- Palenque (Days 13-14): Jungle-wrapped Mayan ruins; combine with Agua Azul waterfalls.
- Merida (Days 15-16): An 8-9 hour night bus bridges Chiapas and the Yucatan. Cenotes and Uxmal nearby.

Daily budget: what backpacking Mexico actually costs in USD
Mexico is one of the best-value backpacking countries in the Americas. A realistic backpacker budget is $40-60 a day, and inland towns run 30-50% cheaper than the Caribbean coast.
- Hostel dorm: $15-25 a night in tourist hubs; San Cristobal goes as low as $10. A private room is around $60.
- Food: $11-17 a day. Street tacos are $1-2 each, and a comida corrida (set lunch menu) is just $3-5 at family-run spots.
- Local transport: $6-11 a day on city buses and colectivos.
- Activities: $6-11 a day for museums, ruins, and nature sites.
One fee to budget upfront: every international visitor pays the DNR tourist fee, which rose to ~$54 USD (983 MXN) in 2026. Long-haul ADO buses are the biggest single line item ($45-85 per leg), but a night bus doubles as a saved hostel night.
Getting around, staying safe, and when to go
Getting around: ADO is the premium long-distance bus network; book seats at ado.com.mx 24 hours ahead, or a full week ahead during Semana Santa (Holy Week, around March 29-April 5, 2026). For short regional hops, colectivos (shared minivans) leave when full, cost a couple of dollars, and run roughly 5am to 8-10pm. Carry small bills and exact change. Grab a Telcel SIM on day one.
Safety and scams: The standard trail is heavily touristed and generally safe. The real risks are petty: use Uber or official sitio taxi stands rather than hailing on the street (this avoids the rare “express kidnapping” ATM run). Use ATMs inside banks to dodge skimmers, and decline any “on-the-spot fine” demanded by police impersonators.
Best time to go: The dry season runs mid-November to April, with February the driest and clearest month. The rainy/hurricane season is May to October, but it brings 30-50% cheaper rooms if you can tolerate afternoon storms.
