A 2-week west-to-east route (Java → Bali → Komodo)
The smart way to do Indonesia is to move west to east so you almost never backtrack. Two weeks is enough for the three headline regions if you accept two short domestic flights.
- Days 1–3 — Yogyakarta, Java. Land here (or take the 6–8 hour train from Jakarta, economy from ~$17). Base in town and hit Borobudur and Prambanan, the two great temple complexes, on full days.
- Days 4–8 — Bali. Fly Yogyakarta (JOG) → Denpasar (DPS). Split your time between Ubud (rice terraces, waterfalls, day trips) and a southern beach base like Canggu or Uluwatu.
- Days 9–11 — Gili Islands / Lombok. Fast boat from Padang Bai or Sanur (1.5–2 hrs) to Gili Trawangan or quieter Gili Air for snorkeling and zero-traffic island life.
- Days 12–14 — Komodo. Fly Bali → Labuan Bajo (LBJ) and do a 2-day boat trip to see Komodo dragons on Rinca, the Padar viewpoint, and Pink Beach.
Short on time? Cut Java and run a tighter Bali–Gili–Komodo loop in 10 days.
Daily budget breakdown (real 2026 USD)
Indonesia is still Southeast Asia’s cheapest country, but island-hopping boats and the Komodo trip are where the money goes. Here’s what a backpacker realistically spends per day:
- Hostel dorm: $5–8 a night for a fan/AC dorm in Bali; expect $10–12 in less-touristed Lombok, Java and Flores.
- Food: $2–4 a meal eating local — nasi goreng, mie goreng, nasi campur from a warung. A plate of fried rice can be under $1; a sit-down tourist restaurant runs $6–10.
- Transport: a 5 km Gojek/Grab motorbike taxi is about $1; a scooter rental is ~$5/day.
- Activities: budget $10–25 for a snorkel trip, temple entry or scooter day; a fun dive in Gili/Komodo is ~$35–45.
Bottom line: shoestring travelers get by on $20–30/day; a comfortable backpacker spends $35–50/day. Then add the big one-offs: the Bali → Labuan Bajo flight (one-way roughly $55–90 if you book ahead) and a 2-day Komodo boat tour (often $100–200).
Getting around, scams to dodge, and when to go
Getting around. Within cities, the Gojek and Grab apps (cars and motorbike taxis) beat haggling with drivers every time. Between Java’s cities, trains are excellent and cheap. For the islands, fast boats run Bali → Gili/Lombok in 1.5–2 hours for roughly $25–45 one-way; book a reputable operator (Bluewater Express, Semaya One) since safety standards vary. For the big east–west jumps, fly — it saves days.
Scams & safety. Never use street-side money changers; count cash yourself and check the watermark. At ferry ports, ignore freelance touts and buy at the official counter. Beware fake-fine “police” who stop scooter riders — ask for ID. The serious one is methanol poisoning from counterfeit spirits and arak, which has killed and hospitalised tourists in Bali, Lombok and the Gilis: stick to sealed beer or trusted bars, and watch your drink being poured. In an emergency, dial 112 (police: 110).
Best time to go. Aim for the dry season, May–September — calm seas, clear water for Gili/Komodo snorkeling, and dry temple days. June–October gives the best Komodo dive visibility (up to 30 m). Wet season (Nov–March) means short, heavy downpours and some Komodo dives cancelled.
