December inverts the Croatian year. The coast and the islands – the entire reason most people come – are shut or empty, and the country’s best winter attraction is inland: Advent in Zagreb, voted Europe’s best Christmas market three years running. Zagreb sits at about 5°C, the coast at 12°C, and the Adriatic, absurdly, at 16°C.
The weather, precisely
Zagreb gets a proper continental winter – cold, grey, foggy, with snow likely at some point. Dalmatia stays mild but this is the wettest part of its year, and the bura is at full strength, closing ferries and coastal roads to high-sided vehicles.
Advent in Zagreb
This is the month’s whole argument, and it is a genuinely good one. Zagreb’s Advent was voted the best Christmas market in Europe three years in a row, and unlike most it is spread across the city rather than penned into one square.
- Ban Jelačić Square – the main tree, the lights and the central stage.
- Zrinjevac park – the prettiest part, with an antique bandstand hosting live music under the plane trees and strings of lights the length of the park.
- King Tomislav Square – the ice rink.
- Advent u Tunelu – installations inside Grič, the Second World War tunnel network under the Upper Town.
- Fuliranje and the courtyard programmes – the food and drink end, where Zagreb actually spends its evenings.
It runs from the last days of November to early January. It is free to walk, busy at weekends, and the food is the point: fritule, štrukli, sausages, mulled wine and rakija.
The coast in December
Not a write-off, just a different proposition. Dubrovnik and Split are mild, green and essentially empty, and Dubrovnik runs its own Advent programme in the Old Town with the Strad un lit and a market on Stradun itself. Walking the walls in December, with nobody on them, is one of the better experiences the city offers.
What you do not get: islands, boat trips, swimming, or most coastal restaurants outside the two big cities.
Christmas and New Year
- Saturday 25 December – Christmas Day, a national public holiday.
- Sunday 26 December – St Stephen’s Day, also a national public holiday.
- Most shops and many restaurants close on both; Advent stalls generally pause on the 25th and resume after.
- Friday 31 December – New Year’s Eve, with a free open-air concert on Ban Jelačić Square in Zagreb and fireworks. Coastal towns hold their own, smaller.
- Saturday 1 January – New Year’s Day, a national public holiday.

What to pack
Proper winter clothing for Zagreb – coat, hat, gloves, and boots that cope with slush. For the coast, layers plus a windproof and waterproof; the bura decides how cold Dalmatia feels far more than the thermometer does.
