April is the month the two Croatias briefly become one. The coast reaches about 18°C and Zagreb, warming fast, is barely a degree behind. Ferries expand, the islands wake up, and the country is green in a way it will not be again until autumn. The sea, at 16°C, is the one thing still on winter time.
The weather, precisely
The continental interior overtakes the coast by early summer, and April is where they cross. For a visitor that means April is the one month you can combine Zagreb, Plitvice and Dalmatia without a change of wardrobe.
It is also a green month. The karst landscape of Dalmatia and the islands is covered in wildflowers and herbs in April; by July it will be brown and hard. Hvar in April smells of rosemary and lavender rather than sunscreen.
What reopens
- Ferries and catamarans move onto spring timetables, with more sailings and more routes. Full summer frequency does not arrive until June, so still check the specific route.
- Island towns reopen through the month – Hvar, Korčula, Vis and Mljet come back to life, though smaller places wait for May.
- The Dubrovnik cruise season begins, which matters: the Old Town is calm in the early morning and evening and crowded when ships are in. Check the cruise schedule and walk the walls at opening.
- Coastal restaurants and konobas reopen for the season.
What April is best for
- Hiking. This is the season. Paklenica on the Velebit, the Biokovo above Makarska, and the island trails on Mljet and Vis are all at their best – warm enough to be pleasant, cool enough to climb, and green. In July they are punishing.
- The walls and the old towns. Dubrovnik’s walls, Split’s Diocletian’s Palace and Trogir are comfortable at 18°C and unbearable at 33°C.
- Plitvice and Krka, still running high on late snowmelt and still quiet.
- Istria – wild asparagus season continues, the hill towns are empty, and cycling the Parenzana trail is ideal now.
- Cheap flights and moderate hotels compared to what is coming.
What April is not for
Swimming. The Adriatic is 16°C and will take your breath. It does not become genuinely comfortable until late June. If a beach holiday is the point of the trip, April is the wrong month – but if the point is the country, it is one of the two best.
Prices and crowds

What to pack
Layers and a light waterproof. A windproof for the coast – the bura is weaker but not gone. Proper walking shoes if you intend to hike, which you should. Swimwear only if you are serious about cold water.
