How Much Money to Bring to Bali: Daily Budgets + Cash Tips

Bali is affordable but tourism inflation is real. Here’s how to budget realistically.

Daily budgets

Backpacker: Rp350,000-500,000/day ($23-33), hostels, warungs, scooter. Mid-range: Rp800,000-1,500,000/day ($53-100) — villas, restaurants, drivers. Luxury: Rp3,000,000-10,000,000+/day ($200-650+): clifftop villas, fine dining.

How much cash to bring

Bring $300-500 USD or EUR cash. Best exchange at official PVA Kuta or Central Kuta (avoid Kuta back-street money changers. Common short-changing scams). Bali Belly stores accept cards but lots of small shops + warungs are cash-only.

ATMs

Withdrawal limit Rp2,500,000-3,000,000 ($170-200) per session. Bank Mandiri + BCA ATMs widely available. Avoid roadside standalone ATMs (skimmer risk). Plan to make 2-3 withdrawals during stay.

Tipping + cards

Tipping isn’t traditional but 10% appreciated at western-style restaurants + Rp10,000-20,000 for drivers + porters. Mid-range hotels + restaurants take cards. Beach clubs + nightlife = cash. Bring Rp50,000 + Rp100,000 notes for tips.

Visa fee

Visa-on-arrival is $35 USD cash at airport (most nationalities). Bring exact USD, they won’t break $100 bills cleanly. 30 days, extendable once at immigration.

Pro tip: Avoid ‘authorized money changer’ shops in Kuta backstreets — most overcount Indonesian rupiah notes (1,000 vs 10,000 vs 100,000 look similar). Stick to airport, BMC, or PVA. Confirm exchange amount before they hand it over.
