How Much Money to Bring to Mexico: Daily Budgets + Money Tips

Mexico offers exceptional value but tourist zones can be pricey. Here’s how to budget realistically.

Daily budgets

Backpacker: 500-800 pesos/day ($30-48), hostels, street tacos, ADO buses. Mid-range: 1,500-3,000 pesos/day ($90-180) — boutique hotels, mezcal bars, Ubers. Luxury: 5,000-15,000+ pesos/day ($300-900+): Tulum/Cabo resorts, fine dining.

How much cash to bring

Bring $300-500 USD cash. Exchange at casas de cambio in tourist zones (CDMX has the best rates). Avoid hotel exchange counters (worst rates). USD is widely accepted in tourist zones but you’ll pay 10-15% premium.

ATMs

Bank ATMs (Banamex, Santander, BBVA) accept foreign cards. Fees 30-100 pesos per transaction. Withdrawal limit 6,000-10,000 pesos ($350-600). Avoid standalone ATMs (skimmer risk + worse rates). Charles Schwab refunds fees.

Tipping + cards

Tip 10-15% at restaurants + 20-50 pesos for hotel porters + 100-200 pesos/day for guides + tour drivers. Cards work at hotels, restaurants, malls. Markets, street food, Uber = cash. Bring small denominations (20, 50, 100 peso notes).

Tourist trap markup

Cancún Hotel Zone, Tulum Hotel Zone, Cabo, and Playa del Carmen Quinta Avenida are 3-5x more expensive than Mexican averages. Stay in non-tourist neighborhoods for 60% savings on accommodation + food.

Pro tip: Use Uber instead of taxis in CDMX, Cancún, and Playa. Set prices, GPS-tracked, safer. Cabbies routinely overcharge tourists 2-3x in tourist zones. ADO buses are excellent + cheap for inter-city.
