Istanbul in 3 days: the perfect weekend itinerary
Istanbul in 3 days requires careful pacing across two continents. This route balances Sultanahmet’s imperial monuments, Beyoglu’s contemporary energy, and a Bosphorus crossing to the Asian side.
Day 1: Sultanahmet imperial core
Morning
Hagia Sophia (free, pre-8am for crowd-free). Walk across to the Blue Mosque (free; closed during prayer times). Basilica Cistern (800 lira, pre-9:30am for short queues).
Afternoon
Topkapi Palace + Harem (650 + 280 lira, closed Tuesday). Allow 3-4 hours for the full complex. Lunch break at Hocapasha Sokak food alley.
Evening
Sunset at Galata Bridge with the city panorama. Dinner at Hamdi (Ottoman classics, book ahead) or Karakoy Lokantasi (modern meze) in Beyoglu.
If you have an extra hour
Suleymaniye Mosque (Sinan’s masterpiece, free, pre-7pm) is the underrated counterpoint to the Blue Mosque.
Day 2: Grand Bazaar, Bosphorus, Asian side
Morning
Grand Bazaar (closed Sunday) for the 4,000-shop covered market experience. Negotiate (start at 30-40% of the asked price). Then Spice Bazaar across the bridge.
Afternoon
Ferry from Eminonu or Karakoy to Kadikoy (Asian side, 20 min, 27 lira). Lunch at Ciya Sofrasi (Anatolian regional cuisine, no reservations). Walk through Moda waterfront.
Evening
Sunset ferry back to European side. Dinner at Karakoy Lokantasi or a Galata waterfront meze restaurant. Galata Tower at night (650 lira) for the panoramic view.

Istanbul Modern (closed Monday) is a great Asian-side morning addition.
Day 3: Beyoglu, Hammam, Galata
Morning
Walk Istiklal Caddesi (1.4km pedestrian boulevard from Taksim to Galata). Stop at the Pera Museum if open. Tunel funicular down to Karakoy.
Afternoon
Traditional hammam experience at Cemberlitas (1584) or Kilic Ali Pasa (Karakoy, modern). Allow 2 hours.
Evening
Bosphorus dinner cruise (or skip the cruise tourist trap and do dinner at a waterfront restaurant in Bebek or Arnavutkoy). Final night Turkish coffee and lokum.
If you have an extra hour
Princes’ Islands ferry (1h 30m to Buyukada) is a half-day option if you swap one of the Sultanahmet sights.
