November is the wettest month of the Italian year and the last genuinely cheap one before Christmas. Rome takes around 110 mm of rain across nine or ten days, the coast closes down, and in exchange you get white truffles in Piedmont, new olive oil in Tuscany, free state museums on the first Sunday, and the art cities at their emptiest since February.
The shape of the month
November opens on a public holiday – Ognissanti, Monday 1 November 2027 – which with the preceding Sunday makes a long weekend and the last domestic travel bump before December. After it, the country settles into low season: rates drop, museums empty, and the seasonal coast finishes closing.
By the end of the month the other direction takes over. Christmas lights go up in the northern cities from around the third week, the Alpine ski resorts start opening, and the Christmas markets in Trentino-Alto Adige open in the last week of November.
Weather: the wettest month, and where it matters
- Rome and the centre – highs near 17°C, lows near 9°C, and roughly 110 mm of rain across nine or ten days. That makes it the wettest month of the Roman year, and the rain arrives in heavy bursts rather than drizzle.
- Milan and the Po valley – grey, damp and increasingly foggy, with highs around 11°C.
- Venice – the peak season for acqua alta, the exceptional high tides. Since the MOSE barriers became operational the worst flooding of St Mark’s Square is far less frequent than it was, but moderate high water still happens; the city posts forecasts and lays out raised walkways.
- Sicily and the south – highs around 20°C and the best weather in the country, which is why Palermo, Siracusa and the Sicilian interior are the smart November choice.
The food month
If there is one reason to accept Italian rain, it is this. November is the best eating month of the year:
- White truffles. The Alba International White Truffle Fair in Piedmont runs weekends from October into early December, with November its peak. Even if you buy nothing, the market hall is worth the trip, and the Langhe are at their most beautiful under fog.
- New olive oil. The olio nuovo pressing happens across Tuscany, Umbria and Puglia in November, and fettunta or bruschetta made with oil from that week is a different substance from the bottle you have at home.
- Chestnuts, porcini, pumpkin, radicchio, and the first cured pork of the year, plus novello wine from 6 November.
Free museums on the first Sunday returns
The Ministry of Culture’s Domenica al Museo – free entry to more than 480 state museums, monuments and archaeological parks – runs from October to March, so November is included. In 2027 that Sunday is 7 November.
Note that some sites, the Colosseum among them, still require a free timed reservation, and temporary exhibitions inside a museum are usually excluded.
What closes
November is when seasonal Italy finishes shutting for the winter:
- The Amalfi Coast – hotels and restaurants in Positano and Amalfi close through the month and mostly stay closed until around Easter.
- Capri, Ischia and the smaller islands – reduced ferries and widespread closures.
- Lake Como and Lake Garda – largely finished for the year by mid-November.
- Cinque Terre – still reachable, with reduced services and a real chance of trail closures after heavy rain.
The cities do the opposite, and that is the November trip: Rome, Florence, Venice, Bologna, Turin, Naples and Palermo running normally with the smallest crowds since February.

After the first weekend, November is the cheapest month of the year in Italy apart from January and February. City hotel rates fall sharply, flights are low, and restaurants have tables. The exceptions are Alba and the Langhe at weekends during the truffle fair, and the Alpine resorts once the season opens at the end of the month.

What to wear
Genuinely waterproof outer layer, and shoes that survive standing water – this is the month Italian streets flood at the kerb. Layers underneath, because Rome at 17°C in the sun and Milan at 11°C in fog are different problems. A compact umbrella, and if you are going to Venice, check the tide forecast the night before and pack something you can wade in.
