June is the month Lisbon belongs to Lisbon. The whole city spends it on the Festas de Lisboa, the rain effectively stops at about 15 mm, and the nights of 12 and 13 June – Santo António – are the biggest street party in Portugal. If you come once, come now.
The weather, precisely
Warm, dry and long: about 26°C by day, 17°C at night, light until nearly 21:30, and rain that has essentially stopped for the summer. It is hot enough that the hills want an early start, and comfortable enough that you will be outside until two in the morning during the festivals.
Santo António and the Festas de Lisboa
St Anthony is Lisbon’s patron saint – born here in 1195 – and the Festas de Lisboa run through the whole of June, peaking on the night of the 12th and the day of the 13th. In 2027 that falls on a Saturday night into Sunday, which is about as good as the calendar gets.
What actually happens:
- The Marchas Populares, night of 12 June. Each historic neighbourhood – Alfama, Bica, Madragoa, Mouraria, Graça, Castelo and the rest – spends months rehearsing a costumed march with its own song, then parades down the Avenida da Liberdade in competition. It is televised nationally, the grandstand seats are ticketed, and the free standing areas fill hours ahead.
- The arraiais – street parties in the old neighbourhoods, which are the real event. Alfama, Graça, Mouraria and Bica fill with trestle tables, paper decorations, cheap wine and music until dawn. They are free, open to anyone, and genuinely local.
- Grilled sardines. Sardinhas assadas on bread, cooked on charcoal in every doorway. The smoke through Alfama on 12 June is the smell people remember. June to October is when Atlantic sardines are fat enough to be worth eating – this is peak.
- Manjerico and the love notes. Small pots of basil with a paper carnation and a folded four-line poem are given as tokens. Do not smell the leaves directly – you rub them and smell your hand. They are sold everywhere for a couple of euros.
- The Casamentos de Santo António – the city marries a group of couples in the Sé cathedral on the 13th and parades them through the streets. St Anthony is the patron of matchmaking.
13 June is a public holiday in Lisbon only – a municipal holiday, so banks and offices in the city close while the rest of Portugal works.
Portugal Day, 10 June
Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas is the national day, marking the death of the poet Luís de Camões in 1580. It is a national public holiday, falling on a Thursday in 2027, with official ceremonies and a military parade. Many take the Friday too – which in 2027 runs straight into the Santo António weekend and makes for an exceptionally busy fortnight.
Practical warnings for festival week
- Book accommodation months ahead for 10–14 June. Rates rise sharply and Alfama rentals go first.
- Sleep is difficult in Alfama, Graça, Mouraria and Bica on the 12th – the parties run to dawn directly under the windows. If you want the festival, stay there. If you want to sleep, do not.
- Trams and roads close around the Avenida and the old quarters; walking is the only realistic way around on the night.
- Take cash. The arraiais are run by neighbourhood associations and many stalls do not take cards.
The rest of June
Outside the festival fortnight, June is simply excellent: jacarandas still flowering into the first half, the miradouros at their best, Sintra and Cascais in full season, and the Atlantic at about 18°C – usable, if never warm. Guincho stays windy; Carcavelos and the Costa da Caparica are the easier swims.

What to pack
Summer clothing and a light layer for evenings. Shoes with grip you do not mind ruining – the arraiais are messy and the cobbles are slick with spilled beer by midnight. Sunscreen, a hat, and cash for the street parties.
