May is the best month in Lisbon by most measures: about 22°C, only 50 mm of rain, light until nearly 21:00 – and the jacarandas come into flower, turning whole avenues purple for a few weeks. It sits just before the June festival crowds and just after the Easter spike.
The weather, precisely
May is warm without being hot, the rain has largely gone, and the light is long. It is the month Lisbon’s hills stop being work and start being the point. Evenings still cool to about 14°C, so a layer after dark is worth having.
The jacarandas
Lisbon’s most photographed seasonal event, and it is free. The city’s jacaranda trees – introduced from South America – flower from late May into June, dropping purple blossom over the pavements.
The best concentrations are Avenida Dom Carlos I, Praça do Príncipe Real, Largo do Carmo and around Rossio. Timing shifts by a couple of weeks with the spring, and the full display lasts roughly three to four weeks.
Two public holidays
- Saturday 1 May – Dia do Trabalhador (Labour Day), a national public holiday. Shops and many restaurants close; there are marches in the centre.
- Thursday 27 May – Corpo de Deus (Corpus Christi), a national public holiday that moves each year with Easter. Banks and offices close, and because it falls on a Thursday many Portuguese take the Friday too – expect a busy long weekend on the coast and quieter city streets.
What May is for
- The miradouros. Lisbon’s viewpoint terraces – Senhora do Monte, Graça, Santa Catarina, São Pedro de Alcântara – are what May is for, and they are free.
- Sintra and Cascais, both excellent now. Sintra is busy from Easter onwards, so go early in the day.
- The Alentejo, an hour or two south-east, still green before the summer turns it gold.
- Outdoor dining and rooftop bars, fully in season.
- ARCOlisboa, the contemporary art fair, usually runs in May; dates announced annually.
The sea, finally rising
The Atlantic reaches about 17°C in May – still cold by Mediterranean standards but the first month it is genuinely swimmable for the hardy. Carcavelos, Guincho and the Costa da Caparica all come into use, and the water will not get much warmer than 19°C even in August. Guincho is famously windy and better for kitesurfing than for lying on.
Prices and crowds

What to pack
Light clothing with a layer for the evening. Comfortable shoes with grip – the cobbles are polished and slick even when dry, and Lisbon is relentlessly steep. Sunglasses and sunscreen; the May sun here is strong. Swimwear if the coast is on the plan, and a wetsuit if you intend to be in the water for long.
