Paris in February is the month the light comes back. Daylight runs 9 hours 25 minutes on the 1st and 10 hours 55 minutes by the 28th – a gain of ninety minutes, nearly all of it added to the end of the day. It is still cold, still grey and still cheap, but it no longer feels like the middle of winter by five in the afternoon, and it carries two of the best free events of the Parisian year.
The number that changes the month
January ends with the sun setting at 17:46. February ends with it setting at 18:32. That three-quarters of an hour is the difference between an afternoon that stops at dusk and an afternoon that has an evening attached to it – and it arrives while hotel rates are still at winter levels.
Precisely: on 1 February 2027 the sun is up from 08:23 to 17:48; on 28 February from 07:37 to 18:32. That is why late February is a materially better trip than early February, and why, if you have a choice within the month, you take the back half.
Weather: cold, damp, and not usually snowy
Highs average about 8°C and lows about 2°C, with rain on around half the days of the month and roughly three hours of bright sunshine a day. Snow falls on a handful of days most winters and almost never settles in the city.
The cold is damp rather than sharp, which is a different packing problem from a dry continental winter: a waterproof outer layer matters more than a thick one, and shoes that cope with permanently wet pavement matter more than either. Expect grey as the default and treat a blue-sky morning as a bonus to be used immediately.
Chinese New Year: 6 February 2027
The Year of the Fire Goat begins on Saturday 6 February 2027, and Paris marks it on the street rather than indoors. Three separate celebrations run over the following weeks, all free:
- The 13th arrondissement – the largest of the three, a full parade with dragon and lion dances through the Asian quarter around Avenue d’Ivry and Avenue de Choisy. Normally held on a Sunday shortly after the new year.
- Belleville, in the 19th and 20th, a smaller and noticeably more local parade.
- The Marais, in the 3rd, which stages a short procession around the Rue au Maire.
Exact parade dates are set by the district town halls and announced in January, so check the mairie’s site rather than assuming the parade falls on the new year itself. Go early for a position, and expect the surrounding métro stations to be extremely busy for an hour either side.
The winter sales end on 2 February 2027
The soldes d’hiver close on Tuesday 2 February 2027, four weeks after opening on 6 January. The final days carry the deepest discounts and the thinnest stock, which is a good trade if you know your size and a bad one if you are browsing. After the 2nd, prices return to normal for the rest of the month.
Free museum days in February 2027
February is a good month for this, and it fixes a gap January leaves:
- Friday 5 February 2027 – the Louvre is free from 18:00. This is the first dependable free Friday evening of 2027, because January’s first Friday fell on the 1st, one of the three days a year the museum closes. Reserve a slot; free does not mean walk-in.
- Sunday 7 February 2027 – the first Sunday of the month, when the permanent collections of a long list of national museums are free. February is inside the October-to-March window during which the Orangerie also applies its free Sunday, so it is included.
- The Louvre closes Tuesdays and the Musée d’Orsay closes Mondays. Orsay also requires a timed slot for the whole of its entrance-hall rebuild, which runs from March 2026 to summer 2028 – the museum stays open, but walk-up entry does not exist.
February and late January are the two quietest stretches of the year at the big museums. A weekday morning in the first week of February is about as close as you will get to having the Louvre’s painting galleries to yourself.
Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday in 2027
14 February 2027 is a Sunday, which has two practical effects. Restaurants that normally close on Sundays often open specially, so the choice is wider than a usual Sunday – but almost everywhere switches to a fixed menu at a fixed price, bookings open weeks ahead, and walking in on the night is not realistic in the centre.
If the date is incidental to your trip rather than the point of it, eat somewhere unremarkable on the 14th and go somewhere good on the 13th or 15th. You will pay less and eat better.
Carnival, and the half-term crowd
Mardi Gras falls on 9 February 2027. The Carnaval de Paris is traditionally staged around that week as a street procession rather than a ticketed event, but the date moves and is confirmed locally each year, so treat it as something to check on arrival rather than to build the trip around.
More predictable is the school effect: the Paris school holidays fall in February, which makes weekends and the half-term week the busiest museum days of the winter. If your dates are flexible, a weekday outside half-term is a different experience from a Saturday inside it.
Salon de l’Agriculture: 27 February to 7 March 2027
France’s biggest public show takes over Paris Expo at Porte de Versailles from Saturday 27 February to Sunday 7 March 2027, open daily from 09:00 to 19:00. It is an agricultural fair in name and a national food festival in practice: livestock halls, every region of France with a tasting stand, cheese, charcuterie, wine and cider, and hundreds of thousands of visitors across nine days.
Two consequences. If you like food, this is one of the best days out available in Paris in winter – go on a weekday morning, eat your way round the regional halls, and budget four hours. If you do not, note that hotels in the 15th and along the Métro line 12 corridor tighten up for those dates.
What February is genuinely good for
The indoor city, at its least crowded and least expensive. The museums, as above. The nineteenth-century covered passages in the 2nd, which exist precisely for weather like this. The food halls and covered markets. The opera and theatre seasons, which are in full swing rather than winding down. And long lunches, which in February are the correct answer to a wet afternoon.
It is also a serious photography month if you are willing to work with the weather: wet stone, low sun when it appears, and the bare plane trees along the quays that summer hides.
What February is not good for
Anything built on being outside for long. The parks are bare, the terraces are heaters-and-blankets rather than pleasant, and the Versailles fountain shows do not start until April – a February day trip there is the château and a cold walk, not the gardens as designed. Day trips built on scenery are better saved for June or September.

February is, with January, one of the two months where a central arrondissement is within reach of a normal budget. Take it: when the evenings are short and wet, the walk home decides whether you go out again.
