Paris in May is the month of public holidays. There are four of them – 1 May, 6 May, 8 May and 17 May in 2027 – and one of them closes more of the city than Christmas does. Get the dates right and May gives you fifteen hours of daylight, 20°C afternoons and a city that has not yet filled with summer. Get them wrong and you spend a day in front of locked doors.
The four dates that decide a May trip
- Saturday 1 May 2027 – Fête du Travail. The one French public holiday that genuinely shuts things: shops, many restaurants, and museums including the Louvre, which closes on only three days a year and this is one of them. Do not plan a museum day.
- Thursday 6 May 2027 – Ascension. A public holiday, and the classic pont: a large share of French businesses also take Friday 7 May, turning it into a four-day weekend. Paris empties, the roads and trains out of the city fill, and the museums stay open.
- Saturday 8 May 2027 – Victory in Europe Day. A public holiday with a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe in the morning and closures around the Champs-Élysées.
- Monday 17 May 2027 – Whit Monday. A public holiday for most, which makes the preceding weekend a long one.
Two of the four fall on Saturdays in 2027, which is bad news for French workers and good news for you: they cost the city nothing in extra weekday closures. The dates that actually change your trip are 1 May and the Ascension bridge of 6–7 May.
1 May in detail, because it catches everyone
The Fête du Travail is not a normal bank holiday. Most French public holidays leave shops and museums running; 1 May does not. Expect:
- The Louvre closed. It shuts on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December only. Many other museums follow suit; check each one individually rather than assuming.
- Most shops closed, including a lot of bakeries and supermarkets. Restaurants are patchy and tend to be booked.
- Union marches through the centre – traditionally on the République–Bastille–Nation axis – which close streets and métro stations for part of the day.
- Lily of the valley on every corner. On 1 May, anyone may sell muguet in the street without a licence or tax. Buying a sprig for a euro or two from a child outside a métro station is the most French thing available to you all year.
Treat 1 May as a walking and park day: the Canal Saint-Martin, the Buttes-Chaumont, the Coulée verte, the Seine bridges. It is a lovely day to be outside and a wasted one to spend queueing at something that is shut.
Weather and light
Highs average about 20°C with lows near 11°C, and around eleven days of rain, mostly as short showers. May is the first month where the weather is reliably pleasant without being hot, which is exactly what a walking city wants.
The daylight is close to midsummer already: on 1 May 2027 the sun is up from 06:32 to 21:06, and by 31 May from 05:54 to 21:45 – fifteen hours fifty. Dinner at 20:00 is still a daylight dinner. Evenings do cool quickly, though, so a layer belongs in the bag even on a warm day.
Free museum days in May 2027
- Sunday 2 May 2027 – the first Sunday of the month, free permanent collections at a long list of national museums. Note that the Orangerie applies its free Sunday only from October to March, so it is not included in May.
- Friday 7 May 2027 – the Louvre is free from 18:00, as on the first Friday of every month except July and August. This one lands on the Ascension bridge Friday, when many Parisians are away – a better free evening than most. Reserve a slot.
- A Saturday in mid-May – the Nuit européenne des musées opens museums across France free of charge into the night. The date is announced early in the year; if your trip is in May, check it, because it is one of the best evenings the French museum calendar produces.
- The Louvre closes Tuesdays, the Musée d’Orsay closes Mondays, and Orsay requires a timed slot throughout its entrance-hall rebuild, which runs from March 2026 to summer 2028.
Roland-Garros starts in May
The French Open’s 2027 qualifying runs from 17 May and the main draw opens on Sunday 23 May 2027, finishing on 6 June. Qualifying week is the insider’s answer: grounds passes are far cheaper and easier to get than main-draw tickets, the outside courts are close-up, and the atmosphere is a tennis tournament rather than a corporate event.
If tennis is not the point of your trip, note that the last ten days of May tighten hotel availability in the west of the city and add crowding to the métro and RER lines serving Porte d’Auteuil.
Versailles and the gardens, properly
May is the first month where a Versailles day trip delivers everything. The Grandes Eaux Musicales run at weekends through the season and add Tuesdays from early May to the end of June – so May gives you three fountain days a week rather than two. The gardens are full, the crowds have not reached July levels, and the walk out to the Trianons is a pleasure rather than an endurance test.
The same is true of Giverny, Fontainebleau and Chartres. If a day trip built on gardens is part of the plan, May and early June are the window.
Terraces, parks and the outdoor month
This is the month the outdoor city switches on properly. The Luxembourg chairs are full by lunchtime, the quays fill in the evening, the Canal Saint-Martin picnic season starts, and the terraces stop being a matter of blankets and heaters. Parks still close at dusk, which in late May is close to 22:00 – the whole shape of the day is different from anything before April.
Practical note: a picnic is the best-value dinner in Paris, and May is when it starts working. A boulangerie, a fromagerie, a bottle and a bridge costs a fraction of a restaurant table.
Crowds and prices
May is shoulder season turning into high season. The first week is inflated by the holiday weekends, the middle of the month is the best value, and the last ten days step up with Roland-Garros and the run-in to June. Nothing in May is cheap by January standards, but everything in May is cheaper than the same thing in July.
