What’s Actually Worth Your Time in Estonia (and What to Skip)

Tallinn Old Town earns its UNESCO billing, but by midday in summer the cruise crowds pack its lanes and the cafe prices climb with them. Walk about 15 minutes north into Kalamaja instead, a district of pastel wooden houses where locals actually live, then carry on to Telliskivi Creative City, a former rail-factory complex that now runs roughly 600 concerts and events a year. Telliskivi also houses Fotografiska Tallinn, the photography museum whose sixth-floor restaurant-bar stays open past the galleries and looks straight back at the Old Town skyline; on Fridays it runs until around midnight.

Most visitors drive through Lahemaa National Park without stopping properly. Park at the Viru Bog trailhead and walk the 3.5 km boardwalk loop out to the observation tower roughly 1.3 km in, where the bog pools open up. It is the best single hour in the park.

One money move: skip the airport taxi. Tram line 4 runs from the terminal to the centre in about 15 minutes for around 1.50 euro. Put the saving toward Kadriorg Park, free to walk and about 2 km east, where KUMU sits, the European Museum of the Year for 2008.
