Destination comparison
Bali vs Maui: which destination should you choose?
The classic ‘tropical-island vacation’ dilemma between Indonesia and Hawaii. Both deliver beaches, volcanoes, and warm seas, but the trip you build in each is shaped by completely different cultural contexts and budgets.
Climate and seasons
Both are tropical-monsoon. Bali has a clearer wet/dry split (dry May-October). Maui has more consistent year-round weather with less rainfall delta; its windward (east) side is wetter, leeward (south, west) drier.
What it costs
Bali is 50-70% cheaper across accommodation, dining, and activities. A comfortable mid-range trip costs roughly half of Maui’s equivalent. Maui’s flight is shorter from North America but on-island costs run high. For real numbers on either side, see our Bali travel budget and Maui travel budget.
Travel style fit
Bali is for travelers who want to settle in for 10-14 days, pick a neighborhood, and immerse. Maui is for travelers who want a clean, easy island week — drive Hana, hike Haleakala, snorkel Molokini.
When to go
Bali: dry season May-October is the sweet spot. Maui: April-May and September-October avoid both winter crowds and summer prices; whale season (December-March) is a draw for some. For month-by-month breakdowns, see best time to visit Bali and best time to visit Maui.
